Long term, unexplained chest pain

Hi all

After struggling with docs for years over this I thought I would turn to the wider world some input. I am a 27 year old, healthy (enough) male who has been getting intermitment, iregular and infrequent chest pains on and off for around 10 years.

During an 'attack' the pain can be quite severe and sharp - I guess a bit like being stabbed. The pain is localised to the left side of my sternum and feels fairly deep (i.e. it cannot be palpated).

Attacks can last anywhere from a few seconds to a day or so, and tend to come in 'clusters' that can be present for up to a week. There can be months between each cluster of attacks (if you get my drift!).

Pain can sometimes be exacerbated when leaning forward, coughing, lying on my side or raising an arm (seems to always vary - and can sometimes not have any stimulators).

During a 'cluster' period and between attacks I can often feel a mild, underlying ache in my chest. This is easy enough to ignore however.

I have had ECGs and chest xrays that have all been fine, and am not affected at all during exercise - I can happily go out and run 10k with ease.

Doctors have in the past rulled out gastro refulx as there was no tenderness on palpation of my stomach area, although I have sometimes thought that attack can follow a big meal and be accompnied by burping (although this may be my mind tricking me).

Muscolskeletal problems have been mentioned, but why would attacks come in clusters and seemingly out of the blue?

I am at a compltete loss and doctors have been no help. My wife is scared that I will just drop dead from a heart attack - and I am struggling to find new ways of reassuring her.

Any help/thoughts/insight/advice would be seriously welcome!

Thanks

    3rd update.

Now my MD is saying it could be a compressed nerve. Something called "cervical rib", which is some sort of oddity where "neck ribs" or an extra rib can be present around your clavicle. Only .06 of the population is born with it (lucky me, if so) and it usually doesn't present itself until midlife. This may be impinging on a blood vessel or nerve and causing the chest pain. An MRI has been ordered. If so, surgery could be required, but I've just read plenty of horror stories about the surgery either doing more harm or not helping at all.

He was concerned because my BP reading was different when testing each arm separately. This compression thing may better explain why I'm having so many hand, finger and massive carpal tunnel pains, as the circulation is hampered to your hands. An angiogram has also been ordered, just for fun.

Next check up Monday. Entire holiday season gonna be wiped out by doctor's appointments.

I am having the same pain on my left chest. Its strange that the doctor was laughing at me when I explained myself with the concern of having a heart related issues.  He said the pain is normal but I should do some ECG and XRAY. I am yet to have that, going for both on monday but my guess is, they will find nothing wrong in the results based on what I have read on here from different people. I don't think this pain is normal, one can not live like this forever. There is definitely something wrong somewhere. I am thinking its due to lack of exercise. Will check back on here for updates. You guys actually made me feel good after reading this, you are my mate on health issues. I pray we all find a way out. I'm 28

Hello again! I was wondering if any of you have experiend short breath as well and a heaviness in then chest? My chest pain have been going away when I put some tiger bomb on it and also focus on my breathing and my mind. I try not toletmyself over stress about IT.

I think ink this pain is stress related and it can be cure with lots of meditation.85 may sound weird but honestly our energies sometimes tells us things and our body feel it before our brain even understands. I will go back to my raw diet & regular exercise when I get home from vietnam see if that helps! I have seen a huge imprvemen since last time I posted here tho! I found true comfort. Stay strong yall!!

Bonjour all no I am from east Tennessee and a 48 year old male with high blood pressure . I have been to the ER so many times over this chest pain I am ashamed to go back . It is always there when I am not active I have holes in all my t shirts from rubbing my left chest area .I also have a physically demanding job but it doesn't bother me while I am actually working. When I am trying to relax is when it realy shows up . Don't know why but sometimes mild and sometimes off to the ever so great and caring ER . LOL ... these post have give me hope that I might not be dying, atleast not at the moment. I am on pain killers for lower back pain and they work great for my back pain but have no effect at all on my chest pain. No matter how many I take , I have thought that the pain meds might even male the chest pain worse at times . That might be because the back pain gets a lot less so all have to think about is the chest pain till the meds wear off. I don't post on any sites but this has realy got my attention and has believe it or not ruined my life for over 20 year's especially the past 4 years when I got the back injury I also cracked my sternum and broke some ribs . And it is a lot more often and intense since then.Don't know what else to say but God bless America all of us suffering from this crazy chest pains and oyeah God bless Donald Trump. But seriously it don't hurt any worse to laugh might even feel a little better for a second or two. Any suggestions will be great. Thanks in advance

    ROAD TO CURE THIS PROBLEM!!

Hello my name is Joshua Eligio and before i begin i want to say this reply will be long and therough and i will try my best to make it short as i can. for starters i myself have had this pain since around 2010 (roughly). i'll be 32 on feb28th and a every day worker doing 4-10's and give plasma fridays and sundays. my job as an anodize line operator requires a whole lot of physical labor and i walk an average of 4 miles a day in 10 hours. so just like you or most that reply, everyday activity does nothing, yet on occasion and at random its like "damn, wtf was that" and it hurts, A LOT!

Here is my solution and just like some have gone to the doctor yet with little to no results in recovery. i also have to add i am not a doctor, phyciatrist, pt, or in the medical field. i will add in some cases of my "spasms" as one would call it i smoke weed. thats right, for starters canibus is medically proven to not only cure but help the body's inflamation and pain. i also live in washington state so i can legally buy. thats not why im here though, dont smoke due to my reply.unless...

now i will go into my core of curing this issue. in my opinion i say "cure" because evidence shows that this can and will work. i'm not gauranteeing full recovery and you can do backflips again because everyone is different. or others with medical conditions allow them not too.

    here is your list.

    1. decrease your caffene content. i had 2-4 cups of coffee before my night shift         then cut back with 1-2 cups a day and less beans.

    2. water- i NEVER drink water and with increase, decrease pain

    3. breathe- we always strain our body. if you lift, yell, exurt a lot of energy. take

a breathe in and out before and after.

    4. eat all food groups- fish (4 all its purposes), chicken, beans, rice, potatos, and

        simple salads.

    5. exercise- not work, im talking walking, get a workout trampaline and bounce,

10mins slow until you get used to it before you start your day. its proven to

help create proper blood flow to ready the brain to function with the body.

    6. decrease junk food- like others i have a wife and 2 kids so eating fast food

is all there is time for. but fruits and vegatables at home for snacks is better

than chips and cookies. keep in mind "good habits create good people."

thats my insight regardless of where its from.

    7. stretch- VERY IMPORTANT

    8. sleep more or less. i do 10hr shifts at my night time. go to sleep by 4am and

can still wake up by 10am and be ready for the whole day. this is your choice.

    9. medical attention- not the stupid doctors. i hate meds and have yet to go to

doctor for this pain. im talking acupuncture, physical therapy, massage, and

if your willing to chiro. i have mixed fealings about chiro, i slipped a disc in

my back in 08 and been through all of it.

    10. follow directions and do the above. SIMPLE NO DOCTOR REQUIRED.

i would like to add i did my 10 steps on a whim, so to speak. i do believe i've covered everything i wanted to whitin these steps and will proofread before posting. so if you find an error PH*$#K you, JK> i have been thinking of doing this review for the past week though because this was the first forum i read. plus i only saw replies on everyone elses pain and what they have done, with no results. i also had this pain last week that was worse than it has ever been close to my heart. ive never had it close to my heart and it hurt worse for longer. this freaked me out and i read this forum and looked up that inflamation CHRONO sumthing which, in worse case would give me a heart attack. i like my heart, thank you. if you made it this far then you passed the test.

to end this i will say INFLAMATION is what you want to decrease the most in your body so ice, heat, epsum salt/lavender baths help, and a little bit of "oosaw!"

there is also a foot pad if its still around. that the chinese (i do believe) created that you put on while you sleep. it suppose to extract your toxins and you keep using it until you see no more toxins. this is suppose to greatly increase health, fatigue, well rested, energized, and everything good. i saw it once on tv and havent done much research on it. again sorry for the long post, hope if people are still looking for answers got help from this. it helped me.

i have all the same issues, chest pain is sharp and stabbing at times but never really seems to go away only gets slightly better. 3 years and i have had everything done imaginable, only irregularities are positive for rheumatoid arthritis three separate times but negative for ana. i also always test high on d-dimer levels, which are indicative of blood clots or inflammation. it is a vicious circle with no answers. 40,000 dollars and counting, at 60.00 a month?

r you serious? i replied with the proper way to cure this. you are a prime example of my method to curing youself. you said it yourself you have high inflimation. this is due to your everyday activites and diet. if you follow my road to recovery you will begin to feel less to zero pain. because i like you have the same issues. yet i dont need a doctor to tell me there is something wrong with me to figure out there is and how to fix it. read my post on the road to recovery and if you follow those simple 10 steps i can gaurantee it will improve if not make the pain go away. it has been working for me for the past few weeks. changed my diet, stretch, drink water and less coffee, and i have yet to have any chest pain whatsoever.

I'm similar. 34 yr old female. Super fit. Unexplained chest pain for almost 2 years. It would come for about 2-4 weeks (dull mid chest) then would be gone for a few months, then return...stay for a couple weeks then go. I had chest xray and ECG and blood everytime. Normal. It returned Sept 1st with a vengeance. Took a quiet step back for a month (mid Oct-mid Nov) and is back full force again. I was admitted to cardiac unit for a week last month. I've had about 20 ECG's, 2 stress tests, chest X-rays, Holter monitor, chest CT, lung scan, heart MRI, cardiac enzymes, endoscopy...everything is "essentially normal". A few incidental findings (mild mitral valve prolapse and a midly enlarged heart-attributed to Athletes Heart).

My chest pain is similar in that it is brought on by some things (bending over, reaching, pushing shopping cart or stroller, pretty much anything requiring moving my torso or using my arms with any pressure. Also anything against my chest hurts-daughter leaning against me, my purse strap, etc) and sometimes it's nothing. Sitting seems to cause pain. As does lying down. Sometimes I literally do absolutely nothing and I'll get sharp pains mixed in with my central dullness. If I push around my chest I can't recreate the pain but I do feel some tenderness. I'm experiencing palpitations but I don't know if they are truly organic or caused by my crazy anxiety over this.

I've seen 3 cardiologists who are all confident it's not my heart. 3 internists who agree. About 8 ER docs who say it's not my heart. I've had a rhumatological blood workup done and no evidence of any inflammatory processes. All my blood workup has been stone cold normal except for an elevated d-dimer.

Anyways, you aren't alone. I'm a VERY stubborn and persistent gal...so WHEN I figure this out...I'll post. Good luck to you and everyone else here with mystery chest pain.

Have your spine looked at. My story sounds similar. I am a triathlete. I had a subluxated T7 which radiated round. I had a ton of cardiac tests

Hey Alitw, I'd love to hear more about your situation. I haven't had my spine MRI'd;however, the Chiropractor suggested it. The Chiro and Naturopath say I have a rib out of whack...and wanted me to have it adjusted but I feel a rib out of whack couldnt cause all this nonsense. What was your pain like? What cardio heart tests did you have done? I'm a conditioned endurance gal...no biking or swimming tho. Running, running stairs, X skiing, etc.

I don't understand while simply just lying here creates problems. Sitting in incorrect positions is a no no as well.

The T7 zone in your thoracic spine basically radiates round to below your breast and over your heart. They call it the heart attack rib literally! My chiro could feel it and manoeuvred it back into place. It took a few days to calm down but I am pretty much pain free now. I have to be careful with posture and I have given up boxing. I have ectopics so that is why they got so obsessed about the heart. My heart condition is in fact benign but it didn't stop them doing tests because of the chest pain. I had everything you can imagine including an electrophysiology study...

I think they mentioned something about rib 4 or something. I'll have to look. I really can't see a rib causing chronic chest pain for 5 months. Especially because of the dull pressure I feel almost constantly. The sharp pain is transient. Comes and goes throughout the day. Usually brought on my bending over. sad Sorry to hear about your struggles...thanks for the responses!

I too have had everything looked at. I went to chiro with the same hope and after a few months, my chiro was convinced he fixed the issue. Unfortunately I'm still with the same periodic pain and regular discomfort. Currently seeing new physician, trying another acid reducer that I take before bed and a new anti anxiety medicine. Hope something changes here! I will keep everyone updated of my findings.

read my road to recovery. im trying to help everyone in this thread because everyone complains about the same issue but i have written a replay on how to solve it.

You are the only post on the internet that mentions bending over, reaching and chest pain. My case is almost identical to yours.I hope if you found out the cause, you would reply to this thread.

I haven't yet. Musculoskeletal has been suggested by the cardiologist who discharged me from the cardiac unit. I promise if I ever nail down a concrete diagnosis I will report back.

I feel my chest pain and presentation overlaps with cardiac, GI and musculoskeletal. It's scary as all get out.

I'm currently trying to rule out cervical angina (aka what alitw suggested). My case and ur case, the only difference that I had a "heart attack sensation" experience at the beginning of all this. I did not have as many tests as u have. And the worst pain triggered is usually a sharp stab when I bend or reaching forward.

I've been doing 40g PPI every morning for last 2 weeks. No change. Plus, I've had the endoscopy done.
