Long time Menieres patient with new help!

I was diagnosed in 1982 with Menieres Disease, after a whole battery of tests at 5 military hospitals. The first two years were terrible! Sometimes my 4-yr-old son had to take care of me when I was stuck in bed, throwing up, diarrhea, could not turn my head. Really weird disease. Then it calmed down and though I still had the attacks, I was no longer so sick. The military doctors put me on 4 medicines to take as soon as an attack hit: Sudafed, Mecklizine, Valium, and most important - Robinul. Now thats a strange medicine for Menieres, because its a stomach medicine, BUT GET THIS: it has a side-effect of stopping the reaction between your digestive system and your balance system. Practically immediately!! (The only problem is a dry mouth, so I just sip most of the day.) The doctors in my area to where I moved assure me I am the only patient who uses Robinul for Menieres. I wonder why - It's great stuff.  BUT NOW I HAVE FOUND SOMETHING NEW - it's a natural medicine in patches! I put one behind my ear that is affected, and one on my belly button, and they last 3 days!  EVEN STOPS THE TINNITUS!!! This is what they are called: MQ Motion Sickness Patch. I hope this helps some other people out there. I'm delighted with them. I noticed some of you asked what brings on an attack, and I've found mostly it is STRESS. My last 8 months have been overwhelming stressful, so I am very grateful to have found these patches. Relax as much as you can, put your faith in God that He can and will handle any problem, and take your meds. I joined this group just to pass on this info.  I hope you are helped by it.

Candy, read what I wrote to Christina. I forgot to add that since I've been using the patches I have hardly had to use Robinul and the other meds. But I keep them with me constantly.

Do you take the Robinul regularly or just when an attack is happening? Thanks for the info smile

When I first began having attacks, I took it daily, but as the symptoms calmed, I let my prescription lapse. DON'T EVER DO THIS!!! It's hard to convince a doctor who isn't used to prescribing it to let you try it. Thirty years after my series of bad attacks I had a vicious one, caused by the stress of caring for my Dad after his horrible surgery. My primary doctor would not prescribe it. Took 3 weeks waiting for an appt with an EENT specialist before I could get some.  I was sick the entire time. He, the EENT, had never heard of it either but I told him about the side effect, and he prescribed it. He still does not prescribe it for any of his other Menieres patients even though I assure him how great it is! Military doctors are more apt to prescribe it than civilian docs. Now I take 1/2 tablet immediately when an attack hits. Waiting 30 seconds makes me sick for an hour. Waiting 60 seconds means I'll be sick all day. My son got me a bracelet that holds 2 pills. That's handy.

Thanks so much for your response. Did you ever have stemetil for attacks? I’d love to get hold of Robinul but I doubt the NHS would permit that for me. So, do the patches work just as well? They seem too good to be true, especially as they’re available on Amazon!

I don't know what stemetil is. I have stuck with what the military doctors started me on in 1983, and just added the patches. I don't use anything all the time, just during times of extreme stress like the illness/death of a loved one. If I'm calm, I don't need any meds for Menieres, but I learned not to let the prescriptions lapse!!! Re the patches, I have found that they work GREAT, but to keep my Robinul with me just in case. I have only had to use the Robinul twice since I started the patches.

That’s fantastic Betty. This is the first I’ve heard of Robinul as a medicine for MM. I will have to run this by my ENT to see if they go for it here in the US. Are the MQ patches over the counter medicine or by prescription?

David, I am in Texas. Little tiny town in Central Texas, called Hico. The military bases are in San Antonio. I hope you can get an EENT to prescribe the Robinul. Have them to look up the side effects and they will see how it helps Menieres. As for the patches, I ordered them from either Walmart or Amazon. Cant remember where I saw the first box but was probably at a pharmacy that also handles homeopathic meds.
