looking for a quick fix

It was explained by the eye specialist yesterday that I have posterior blepharitis.  No crusting on my eyelids just really bad dry eye to the point that I have to turn my office lights off as my eyes are super light sensitive and dry.  I have some days that are ok but then other days like today where I started ok and by lunch time its lights out.  Im not getting much relief from drops but do get relief from Hycor eye ointment.  IIs there a surgical fix to this problem??

Are your glands clogged, did he test you for actual dry eye by doing a tear break up test. You might not actually have dry eye, just irritation from the lipid layer of your tear film being off. Some people also dont produce enough oil, some too much. Just treating with artificial tears would be under treatment. Need to know more info. Xx. I have mgd too/posterior blepharitis.

I have watched a video of a treatment called LipiFlow which is a non invasive heat and message treatment. It sounds promising, but is not covered by insurance and is expensive. You need to go to their website to find an Opthalmologist that offers the treatment.

Standard beginng treatment is very warm cloth aplyed to closed eyes for 5 to 10 min 2x a day. Sometimes lid massage. Lid cleaning, artificial non preservative tears 3 to 4 times a day and possibly fish oil or flax supplement. Thats first line. Others are then added if needed, steroids, antibiotics, plugs etc. Plus drink lots of water. When outside wear sunglasses.

Thanks everyone, yes I have started the heat treatment and no I haven't had a clogged gland test.  I agree I must drink more water and possibly start a suppliment.  Im not having much luck with relief from artificial tears. currently using Systane Balance and Bio Tears...

Ive just started experinaceing this since mid march, came on over night. The compresses make my eyes oily. I had hazy vision when this all started. My days vary and im sick of not knowing how i will be each day. Yes have him check to see what your glands are doing, they are either underproduceing or over produceing. My first doctor did a tear break up test,i barely passed, but i passed he never checked my lids. Got the diagnosis from the second doctor who checked my lids right away and expressed some oil from my glands. She said my lid margins were slightly inflamed and my oil a bit too thick.my right eye is worse. I now am very light sensitive too. Very hard.

I am interested to know that now you have the diagnosis, has the treatment changed i.e. heat treatment, eye drops, etc.  Of course it is always good to have an explanation but does it actually help matters?

Hi helen there is no quick fix I'm afraid . I too was diagnosed with posterior blepth nearly 3 yrs ago . My anterior blepth cured it's self after 2 bouts of the messy anterior blepth but I've been left with it down deep in the glands ( posterior blepth .) . don't waste good money on super cures or lotions , the best idea is too discourage the little" bugs" ( for a better word ) by regularly keeping the gland openings open and the naturally produced oils flowing . The MGD bag helps alot but is largely a waste of time if not followed up immediately with a lengthy " massage " . Agood ten mins , then eye lid and gland openings cleansing . Whatever you do don't take it out on your eyelids . It's not their fault and will ,  not surprisingly ,  swell up ( closing the gland openings ) as a result of being punished . Ref computer use ensure that there is no other light coming into your eyes ( back ground light ) that would be brighter than the screen . It confuses your pupils and makes you stare ( ie. not blink enough ) . Also , if you can touch the screen then you are too close .  my condition is "ok(ish ) now and i no longer need the lacrilube to see me through 7 hrs sleep , instead I can usually get away with visco tears GEL instead . ( long priods of dreaming , REM sleep , however , can leave me with very dry eyes upon waking ). Only used pre boiled water when cleansing , use good quality kitchen paper ( with a bit of abrasive texture to it ) , add a squirt of baby bathing lotion to the warm water and obviously don't cross contaminate . Eye gland expression is available in clinics as is the insertion of tiny tubes to keep the glands" puffed out " to a desirable diameter .

    all the best.

I am a bit gentler on my eyes, very warm usually thera pearl mask, you can heat them in the microwave. Then some days when needed I do a light lid massage along the lid margin of each eye. I usually then follow with a good wipe off the lid with a clean wash cloth or on some days i squirt a small dab of baby shampoo in the palm of clean hands, soap my fingers shut my eyes and rub closed eyes along lash line. Then i follow with wet q tips one with each eye. I gently rub the lash line with the q tip on upper and lower rim of lid. Then usually a drop of refresh lubricant eye drop. My oil seems to easily come out. Not really thick so i dont do heavy lid manipulation. After doctors apt today this all could change. Its my routine for now.
