looking for exercises

Hello everyone

I have had fibromyalgia for some time but been diagnosed for a year, and over the last six months everything seems to be getting worse. I get bad foot pains even when I'm not walking about, my hip and leg pain wakes me up still even though it's summer, I have problems with stiff shoulders and neck, and now my fingers have started aching along with my right elbow. These are my main physical problems, and I was thinking about trying some gentle stretching exercises, only I don't want to over do things and wondered if anyone knows of some good exercises or of a site I can look them up.

Hugs to everyone, and enjoy your days.

Thank you

Boqer

Hi Boquer.  Try looking up Tai Chi or Chi Gong (Qi gung), both are excellent for fibro sufferers and are recommended as they are gentle exercise but good for relaxation and de-stressing too.  Alternatively swimming is very very good, one of the best exercises in fact because it's low impact.  I think there are pilates classes specifically designed for pain sufferers too.

Thank you loxie, I think Tia chi is a good suggestion and one I could try at home, I will have a look into it, maybe YouTube it.

      Gentle hugs

It's certainly something you can do at home, doesn't need special equipment or much space, just a spare bit of floor space.  There are many different types, try 'short form' first, it's less physically demanding for something to start with.

Yes, it looks quite low impact, do you do Tia chi, and for how long do you think I should start with.

Hi Boquer.  I used to do Tai chi regularly but I had a serious accident which damaged an ankle and it doesn't flex enough any more to continue with it so I swapped to Chi gung.  I don't think it matters how long you do it for but to start I would suggest just half an hour at a time.  Its very important to learn each move entirely before moving on to the next, ensuring posture and leg/arm placement are correct, for max benefit.  Once you've learned a series of moves by heart you can spend longer doing the set of movements, however long it takes to do the whole set for example.  You'll know best how much energy you have so when you start to feel tired etc., just stop and rest.  If lessons are booked, theyre usually no more than an hour at a time but at home doing it yourself, I'd think less would be better, so as not to over tire yourself or not to get bored because you're not doing it in a group environment.

Thank you Loxie for your reply, it seems good advice. I think half an hour would be too much to start with, but hopefully I could work up to it. I look forward to trying some smile

Yes, thank you Laura, I used to love swimming, I'm not sure if there is a heated pool in my area but there is a leisure centre so there may be. I'm not sure about doing it in the winter though, it's all I can do to have a shower when the weather gets cold.enjoy the rest of your day, hugs

    Hi Boqer

I have posted tis today to a few sufferers, I don't think it is a lack of belief, people who have never suffered an illness can never understand and when doctors and ''specialists'' have only drugs to help because they dont support ''alternative treatments'' the community has to find something themselves.

Fortunately for me I do not suffer with many ailments and is there a 'cure' probably not, but I can tell you of 2 people I have met who do suffer from 'Fibro' the first was a lady who was at a convention and I met her when she was sitting on the floor in a que and the second was a lady who attended a 'fit camp' in her wheelchair.

The first lady was introduced to a nutritionist at the seminar and agreed to try a course of specific vitamin supplements and today has a much improved life, she no longer has long stays in bed, she is comfortable walking, she has less bad days of pain and has had a new baby and now has her own business.

The second lady over 3-4 months attending her 'fit-camp' and being coached on changing her diet with the aid of meal replacements has also vastly improved her life.

the only conclusion I can come to is our bodies lack the right nutrition, the vitamin supplements and meal replacements these ladies were on were obviously helping their bodies get the nutrition they needed.

We all know that if obese people with type 2 diabetes lose weight their diabetes can improve, they will always be diabetics, but the symptoms will improve.

Given help, the human body is capable of healing many conditions unfortunately Doctors only prescribe Drugs which in themselves cause other problems which means more drugs are prescribed to counter the effects of the first, and on it goes.

Natural products are not even considered because drug companies cant patent them and doctors are not nutritionists.

Thank you for your response Jim, I agree that our bodies are more complex than most people think, and very often natural remedies do a lot more good than prescription drugs.

Hi, I know exactly how you feel. I have the same aches and pains all over. All I do daily is use an exercise ball, and 2kg weights. And stroll around the garden. Nothing too exciting. Not done much for a few days as I have been in so much pain, even having a hot shower is not helping at the moment. Have a good day if you canbiggrin

Thank you for that Anne, I know someone with an exercise ball so I will have a look at that, but I think the weights sound a bit heavy for me, maybe something lighter.

I hope your pain gets better soon, it seems a cruel illness rolleyes

      Take care
