Looking for natural options for my 7yr old daughter

My daughter was diagnosed last month with LS and is almost done with the 30 days of Clobetasol. Redness has improved, but I still see her itch. We are supposed to switch to using Protopic after the 30 days. I would much prefer natural options (have been very upset to use steroids on her). I want to be ready so that I don't have to go back to steroids if she flares. I've been taking notes on what has helped others. Was curious for those who have used olive oils or calendula-what brands do you recommend? Thank you!!!

It must be very hard for your daughter to have LS at such a young age!  hard for you too, as you will be the one managing it mostly. I wondered why you used the Clobetasol for a month, was it because of white plaques of skin or was it to treat severe itching. Have you been told to use it for maintenance or not?  cos I don't personally think that's a good idea, the cream is super strong and I think should only be used in emergency flare ups.

With regard to oils, Emu oil is very good to use, you can buy it online, also Jojoba oil is good, as is coconut oil, these are important to use at bed time as to stop fuseing which is one of the horrible symptoms of LS.

Have you tried cutting out Gluten?  For many with LS it is a big problem, and maybe you could try it for a month to see if it helps her because itching all the time is very distressing for anyone, more so for a child I think.

Other ideas would be to make sure you give her sugar-free treats because sugar is one of the worst things we can have, it really is, it's hard to believe that sugar would exasperate these issues, but they do.

One thing to remember with LS is the although she is very young to have this she will go through periods where she is free of LS for months or even years, that's how it goes, so its not all bad!!

Aquaphor is soothing to skin and a barrier to prevent urine from stinging the skin.

i notice you mention urine stinging and i was wondering about that.  before i was diagnosed with ls i was trying lots of home remedies.  i got it in my head that maybe the pH of my urine was the problem.  it did tend to be kind of acidic.  has anyone heard of acidic urine realted to ls?

Hi Krista, I alternate with emu and coconut oils, using each for a week. The itching will go away by soaking in a bathtub with 1/3 cup of baking soda for 20 minutes several times a week.  Also, if you haven't already, read the thread, "An Experiment with Borax".  It's a godsend.
