Loose stools since hiatus op last june

Posted , 2 users are following.

Following a laporasic op for hiatus hernia last june, which was to quote the surgeon a belt and braces as U had a external clip for 2months.On removal of this I had severe diarrhoea for a few days.Since then almost everything I  eat passes very quickly thro me.Ive lost 3stones in4months and amvery weak.In Jan I saw my surgeon who only then mentioned it was a side effect and I would have to take imodium .It apparently is a result of changing the stomach around This was not mentioned before surgery.. Due to my hernia reoccuring and needing a major op I am worried of further side effectss  Anyone else had two hernia ops and could advise. Also any dietary advice,Have not been able to get onfo from hospital

    Hi may75103

i  have had repeat 4 open surgeries  to repair a hiatus hernia and note your comments of not bieng properly informed of the possible side effects that could occur after surgery can i enquire if your second proceedure was laprascopic?  i also had my stomach repositioned  i suffer from the same problem of Diarrhoea now and again i was informed by my surgoen it was caused by damaged to the vagus nerve which causes a condition known as Functional dysmotiliy disorder of the stomach which slows the transit of food through your digestive system.which Causes the stools to be looser than normal i have used loperamide for the past twenty years and it clears up the problem within  a day or two i dont have loose stools all the time i just take the medication when this symptom re-occurs .it would be be prudent to find out from the surgeon who performed your 2nd op to find out if your stomach is slow in emptying . unfortunately all operations carry some form of risk

    Hi may

i recieved your reply .i note that you hernia has reoccured a second time at this stage i would ask you to consider your propensity for reoccurence . if your son came in with a tear in the knee of his jeans you would sew the tear up to mend them . however if he came in the next day jeans torn at the knee again you would consider placing a patch of denim over the damaged area to strengthen the knee and to reduce the chance of the tear reoccuring. your diaphragm is different it is a thin sheet of muscle which is more delicate than denim however the priciple is the same you are looking to have a weaken area strengthened to reduce the risk of reoccurrance. the tear in your diaphragm may be smalland you surgoen may decide the placing of a patch is not neccessary however the operation isnt. a small proceedure so when your talking to your surgoen ask him to consider the placing of a patch to strenghen your diaphragm irrespective of how small the hernia is he has to consider your propensity for reoccurrence . no surgoen can give you any assurance your hernia wont reoccur a 3rd or fourth time nor would they like to see you a third or fourth time .with this problem. your surgeon may mention a problem of rejection as reason for not placing a patch however the propensity for reoccurrence is greater than any rejection i had my patch placed on the fourth proceedure twenty years ago and havent had any problems of rejection

in my case  the surgeon did not place a patch purely based on his findings during surgery(small hernia) at that point of the operation he did not consider my propensity for reoccurance. had he done so i would not of needed further surgery to place a patch. i am only explaining my experiences to you to give you better understandingof what could go wrong. i wish you well with your forth coming op
