Losing my voice on steroids. has anyone been able to overcome this apparently rare side-effect?

So a huge portion of my income is music, and I have important gigs coming up in a week, so any useful input here is much appreciated.

I have pretty severe UC, and when in a flare I'm normally given prednisone to stifle it. unfortunately, every single time I take it, I lose my voice. Not raspy, not pitch, just completely gone, having to strain even for a normal face-to-face conversation.

I've been flare free until a few days ago, and I requested this time from my doc if he could try a different steroid, which he said he could, as methylprednisolone is available, albeit it's a shorter, more aggressive taper.

Unfortunately, I'm now in panic mode because I took my first dose last night, and I'm ALREADY feeling strained after making a phone call this morning.

Do any doctors or someone that have direct experience with this have any advice for me to be able to perform next week? do i excercise it every day or do I baby it? is there another drug I can take to counter that?

These are important gigs that will both probably turn into regular venues so you guys are really saving me here.
