Losing the Will.

So, I've been up all night drinking and now wondering how on earth I'm going to get through this day. My plans to go to my Gp requesting Nalmefene were abolished when I received an app with alcohol services next week. Thanks for your kind help Joanna, although I still feel very stuck and lost!! Any advice on how I can move things forward quickly at my app next week would be gratefully received, I need to do something quickly to reduce my intake.

I hope that you were able to take a nap...since this was posted about 6 hours ago.  Its so good that you have the appt next week! Are you good at making appts when you have been drinking?  You need to get there...and you need to be completely honest that you can not stop and would like to try....what? Do you want to try the Sinclair method?

I don't think anyone can tell you right now how to decrease your intake because you are in the cycle of alcoholism and no matter what anyone says...you will drink to the level of comfort for you....I would try and cut down...but even when I tried that i couldn't cut down.

I hope you get the help that you need at this next appt. sad

I cannot put the link on here, but if you google:

C Three Europe NHS Nalmefene Resources

the first result should be the article I recently wrote about the situation with the NHS and getting an assessment about this medication.  The title of the article is NHS Information and Resource Service for Nalmefene.

It's worth a read for sure, as it explains what barriers/hurdles you may face at the appointment and how to overcome them.  Such basics as the fact that although it is commonly known as The Sinclair Method, it isn't officially called that as far as the NHS is concerned, so don't go to your appointment and ask for The Sinclair Method as they will likely look at you blankly....

Let me know if you need anything else in the way or information....

Thanks Joanna, I recently emailed emailed you regarding how to be prescribed Nalmefene, you kindly responded stating that the inclusion of this medicine is not supported in my area. I was all equipped to go to my go to request this, when I received my app to alcohol services, which I have been waiting for since Dec 2015. I am still drinking daily, half a litre of vodka per evening, and every time I try to reduce the withdrawal symptoms are horrendous. I have made so many positive changes in my life over the past few months but find my addiction supersedes everything else. Is there any advice you could offer to make the process of withdrawing from alcohol more quickly and effectively in time for my app on Tuesday?

Massive thanks to all, I have had lots of support offered since joining this site, and it's nice to know I'm not the only one in the vices of evilness!!

Hopefully, Paul will see this and respond to you with regards to withdrawal as that is his speciality, and as a counsellor I am not able to offer much with regards to advice on this - he is the properly qualified person to advise you.

As both I and Paul have said previously, the quantity you are drinking, means that you need a detox, diazepam or Librium. Please do not attempt to cut right back or you will suffer badly.

Tapering is a lovely idea, but if we say drink six pints a day and attempt to knock it down to four, by the time we have had two pints, we have got that nice feeling and good intentions go out of the window. I know you drink vodka not pints, but the analogy is the same.

It is good that you have got an appointment next week, but steel yourself up for a bit of a challenge, be prepared and it sounds like Joanna has pointed out to you the difficulties you might face and how to try to over come them.

I'm sorry, I've only just been notified by e-mail that this 'New Discussion' existed. I rely on those e-mail notofications, but I have had a lot through today so I am hoping the bug on the site has been sorted.

I doubt you will have got anything resolved with regard to withdrawal before Tuesday because, even with medication, it takes longer than that. RHGB was correct in saying that you will need a detox using Librium or Diazepam. These are not easy to get on the NHS, which is a scandal because they are necessary. Very few people can taper down. What tends to happen is that they start off with good intentions but the body doesn't allow that to continue and they end up doing a couple of days and then finding themselves having a bad day when everything goes back to the same as before, or worse.

Don't be tempted to go cold turkey as this can be extremely dangerous.

With alcohol detox, you stop drinking and take medication to counteract the withdrawal symptoms. It is normally very comfortable and, if you get sufficient dosage, almost all withdrawal symptoms should be eliminated.

Because it has taken me four days to see this post, you may have found a way to get treatment, Vodka07. My apologies again for seeing it so late.

You are so understanding...and every alcoholic patient should have someone like you...YOU GET IT...and that is very odd...since you don't HAVE it...Thank you for validating the difficulty for us and realizing that we DO need some sort of benzo to relive withdrawal symptoms.

I have never had a Medically Supervised Detox.  I have read of others, on this Forum, who have.  It might be your best bet, if you want to reduce quickly.   I am doing the "tapering down", this time, using Nalmefene.

I have done Personal Detox at home, in the past. I had Librium a couple of times.  I have Valium/Diazepam just now, for anxiety problems.   Although I don't seem to get Withdrawal Symptoms other than Craving Alcohol, trying  for an alcohol-free day is Hell for me.  All I think is DRINK !

This battle is some challenge, Vodka07.  We are all in it, in or own ways.  We all want to win it !  I hope you find your way, quickly.

    Good Luck at your appointment.
