losing weight rapidly ?

hi all

I am losing weight, which is great in one sense, but is real quick, seems like a pound a day at times, have lost 15 pounds in 4 weeks.

I am over weight, and before getting ill 4 weeks ago, as hard as I tried I could not hardly shift a pound (I do have right flank pains which are being investigated, and I get fatigued real quick)

is this all down to the GERD/acid reflux ?

have you lost weight rapidly as well with GERD ?

    Short answer: yes.

Long answer: It hasn't been exclusively due to GERD, however over the past 10 years, my reflux has accounted for the majority of my weight loss (80lb of it). My reflux started, hard, when I was about 290lbs. I'm now at 210.

Recently (in the last few months), reflux has directly resulted in my losing 10 lbs. All in all, my major drops -- from 290 to 260, 260 to 220, and later 220 to 210 -- have been directly due to reflux not allowing me to eat, or fear of reflux, which leads me not to eat.

And yeah, right flank pain seems to indicate gallbladder. Fun. Been there, done that. After 4 years of it, decided to get it out. I don't miss it, but I don't fool myself into thinking it was entirely without consequence.

All I can advise is eat small, frequent meals, make sure they're high-nutrition, and make sure they're alkaline where possible (so basically stock up on veggies, keep it relatively low fat, and consider a GERD diet). Listen CLOSELY to your body: track symptoms with journal. Also, food. Also, your emotional state, because that matters more than...well, more than I ever thought.

Your weight loss will eventually slow down. It may still keep going, but work to make sure you're not hitting any nutritional deficits. Since you say you're overweight, use this to your advantage. A good multivitamin can help here. (Expect to pay. But yes, a good multivitamin is worth it.)

For me, drinks like Huel and Soylent have worked OK, but I do get some refluxing from them, so I supplement them with something like a piece of bread. Protein shakes are good, too, because they deliver a lot of nutrition (but not a lot of calories; I'm personally a fan of the Vegansmart line). The goal is to make sure you're getting in no less than about 1500 calories per day. (Don't do it in just protein shakes like Vegansmart.) Yes, you'll lose weight, but this should be enough to keep your energy levels up and for you to make sure you keep your nutritional requirements in check.

    Best of luck!

      thanks Norb

great advice, and very interesting to hear of your weight loss with GERD. I am down to 223 at mo

still could lose another 28, this would pitch me at ideal weight

endoscopy earlier this year did show small hiatus hernia, so guess this does not help

this is my regime, action at minute :

      1.miso soup/broth

      2.alkaline foods (metabolic acidosis)

      3.eliminate dairy

4.plenty of avocado (the king of fruits. Power house of nutrition)

5.cut out tea (caffeine is huge irritant for the gut)

6.Manuka honey (is great healer of the stomach, esophagus. Also kills Helicobacter Pylori)

keeping journal is a must too as you say.

interesting about your gallbladder. I am seeing specialist this Friday. I am convinced this is what is causing my right flank pain.

I seemed to have developed dairy intolerance too with my current health. This maybe due to the fat content, not sure

I can also totally relate to this. I've had reflux on and off over the years but in July it hit me like a train. I found it very scary and my anxiety went through the roof which then in turn, made the reflux worse. I could hardly eat and then scared to eat. I've lost about 25 pounds since then. I've never known weight drop off so fast. I was overweight but it's quite worrying when you loose it that fast. I'm trying to watch everything I eat and I'm taking advice from a nutritionist. Tests showed a small hiatus hernia and reflux but that's all really. Vitamin b12 low but looking into that. I'm just hoping I will be able to eat normally again one day 😔

wow, is same as me, i cannot stop losing at minute. I need to lose weight, but is averaging 5lbs a week.

yes, my anxiety has not helped, I so need a diagnosis for this right flank pain, nausea. Seeing doctor Friday about possible gallbladder issues.

is the nutritionist helping with anything specific ?

It seems crazy how many of us suffer the same symptoms but no one has a definite answer. I've decided I have to find out what works for me by trial and error and taking advice on here. The nutritionist suggested many of the things you have listed below plus I have given up bread and many things with gluten in. I eat sourdough bread now and it's actually ok. I have cut down on sugar as I was totally addicted and that has been hard but I feel better. She wants me to eat things that will calm my gut and be anti inflammatory and it does seem better. I've also given up tomatoes which I really miss but very acid. I do find I'm quite scared to try things in case it gets worse again. Good luck at the doctors and hope you get some answers.

tomatoes are off for me too. Calming the gut is crucial.

another good food list, is the PRAL (potential renal acid load) food list, you can find good PDF online

I feel pretty poorly at mo, am off to doctors at 5pm today, get cardio side checked out first
