Loss of appetite with lisinopril

After some weeks on lisinopril 5 mg, I had severe loss of appetite.  Did not make the connection until several months later. Cut my dose to 2.5 mg, after a few weeks my appetite was much improved, but my blood pressure is now too high.  Has anyone had this problem, and if so, what switch helped.   Would like to stay with Ace Inhibitor, or possible ARB.

The bp guide (numbers) are set by the Joint National Committee which have doctors on their payroll who are paid big money to go along with the drug companies, these guidelines have changed 8 times during since about the year 1995.  The numbers are set lower and lower to sell more drugs.. please research for yourself.. Do you really think the bp of a senior citizen should be the same as a much younger athlete or a frail small person will have the same bp as a tall robust person.?  NO, of course not... drugs that change our physiology are not only dangerous but are immoral too.  Please research what you put into your body and WHY..  The drugs we take are making us sicker and the side effects CAUSE problems...Good luck Kay and best of health to you..

Wish I could have a severe loss of appetite, for a few weeks ...

?But seriously folks, is the Lisinopril the only drug you are on?  To be effective doctors often prescribe a combination, one Ace/ARB, a beta blocker, a diuretic, maybe a calcium channel blocker, maybe some others.  And there are certainly many drugs in each category to try.  For me the critical one is the diuretic.

?And of course, diet, exercise, weight, etc, but we tend to assume you're already doing what you can in those categories.  Then there are specific foods like eggplant, shiitake mushrooms, beets, and dark chocolate, which can have short-term effects on your BP, if you want to try to use them for as-needed boosters.

I had a specific question so did not go into details, but I am on no other medication.  Am in good health except for an inherited progressive kidney disease which makes it very important to keep blood pressure down.  Had good pressure for many years, but as pressure started to creep up and after much research, agreed to start on as small a dose as I could. As disease progresses will affect blood pressure more, but for now, just need minimum dose.

But the problem may be that if you block BP in just one mode, it just goes to another mode, so you need to block as many as possible.  Also, couldn't the kidney disease itself be the immediate cause of a loss of appetite?  I would look at adding a simple diuretic, as it's quite possible that kidney malfunction and effect on electrolytes is the direct cause of (some) BP.  Then treating it with an ARB is treating symptoms and not cause.

I have polycystic kidney disease which differs from many chronic kidney diseases.  There are specific studies showing the advisability of starting with ACE Inhibitors, or ARB if there is a problem with ACEis.  I had assumed my appetite loss was from my disease until I read that even though appetite loss is rare with ACE Inhibitors, it is more prevalent with those female and over 60.  I am female and 60 and have had problems with appetite loss with allergy medicines, etc. in the past.  When I thought back I realized that my appetite loss started within a few weeks of starting lisinopril, I halved my dose and now I have my full appetite back.  I have a doctor's appointment in a few weeks and will discuss the situation with him.  However, since appetite loss is not as common as many of the side effects, I thought perhaps it would be helpful if someone else had had a similar problem.

Kay, I did good on Lisinopril for a month or two and then had problems with nausea and cramping. I changed to Losartan. Also, If your appetite is good on 2.5 mg of lisinopril, but your pressure is now too high, ask your doctor if you can take a little diuretic with the Lisinopril. For me adding a little HCTZ turbocharged my ARB and my pressure dropped more than 20 points more.

Hi, what was the conclusion? I feel as Lisinoprol decreases my appetite. Well I know for a fact because when I'm not taking it, my appetite increases tremendously. (Like it use to be) I'm curious to find out your outcome.

    Kay,

untreated I  was 170/110. I started on Lisinopril / HCTZ and within a few hours I dropped to 120 /80 and stayed fairly stable for a couple months.

Then I noticed that every time I would eat, 20-30 minutes after I would feel noxious. It got worse to the point that I would have to lay down after eating. After doing some research I found that some people have an allergic reaction to Lisinopril. For some this causes digestive problems. If you google you can find this: "Intestinal angioedema caused by angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors such as lisinopril is rare but well documented in the literature. Patients with this condition typically present with common symptoms such as diffuse abdominal pain, cramping, nausea, and emesis."

I changed to an ARB, (Losartan) and my nausea problems went away. If Losartan does not do the job alone, It combines really well with a diuretic or CCB.

    Good Luck!
