Loss of smell and taste

I have recently had a bad cold/flu followed by a sinus infection. I've never had a sinus infection before and have completely lost all sense of smell and taste. It has been absent for over two weeks now and I'm starting to worry that it wont come back.

Is this normal? Am i worrying about nothing?

Ive been given antibiotics for 7 days but they don't seem to have helped. I take my last one's today

Hi Gayle - pretty typical to lose taste or smell - or both - following a sinus infection. I recall it happening to me a few years ago. Sometimes the antibiotics themselves, used to treat the sinus infection is the cause. In my case, I didn't think I was every going to get my smell back. It took a good 6-8 months. Everyone is different.

Let your doctor know what's going on to be on the safe side and rule out any other condition such as nose polyps.

    Good Luck!

    My Best,

    Glenn

    Hi

Consider using nasal irrigation to help you with your sinus issues. Plenty of videos on YT instructing you in the technique.

Also I have lost the sense of smell, and a lot of my sense of taste, many times. It can take a long time (months) to return. After two sinus operations my sense of smell has returned just a little.

Going back to your doctor could be useful, you would need to see an ENT for a more thorough examination. As this is the firs time you have experienced a sinus infection then hopefully it should resolve well for you.

Overall I have found oral antibiotics to be a waste of time with sinus infections.

    Good luck.
