Loss of smell & Taste

Hello new to this discussion,I have lost my smeell and taste for 3 years now as I have gotten Bronchiectasis which I felt was the cause, but now reading about Aspirin which I have taken for ever may be the cause.

I had an operation on the nose for polops that didn't do anything so I'm going to stop the Aspirin,so GOOD IDEA OR BAD ? for anyone who has tried, Thanks.

Best regards,

Charlie

I never heard of one Aspirin a day causing a problem. But you could cut down to one baby aspirin a day. It's good for the heart.

Thanks That was what I have been taking it for,but I'm going to try and go without and see if that may help.

I have had Rhinitis (like hay fever but all year round having to take Antihistamine) for the last two and a half years. I only realised last year that I could no longer smell anything. It is something you take for granted, until you loose it. My tast buds are not as good as they used to be I must say, I do not enjoy tea at all now. There are worse senses to loose, but it is still a loss. I don't take Asprin at all, as I have Asthma and that also Iboprufen brings on an attack.

Have you thought of  trying something like Zyrtec something for Allergys. It could be something in the house your breathing.Whatever you try, you gotta give it time to have an effect. But me I'm a baby and when I know something isn't right. Well, I'd be running to see an ENT. He'll test for allergys. At any rate good luck my friend.

Have you already seen an ENT specialist and had a diagnosis of anosmia? If not, worth asking your GP for a referral to your local hospital. Or, depending on where you live (and assuming you're in the UK), you could maybe request a referral to a specialist who deals with anosmia such as Lisha McLelland in Birmingham or Carl Philpott in Norfolk.

If you haven't already, take a look at the "Fifth Sense" charity website - there's a link under "Related information" on the right side of this page. Good luck!

CURE 100% !! I LOST SMELL AND TASTE FIR 3 YEARS. I haD surgery it didn't work. Prednisone alone did not work. Then my doctor put me on a heavy steroid taper from 60 mg down for two weeks during that time I took Neil med saline rinses with prescribed budesonide Rinses. Smell and taste RESTORED. NO ONE was worse than me.

This method is 100% fool proof. the polyps are the problem the budesonide gets rid of them. Period.

    hope this helps someone.

Hi, can you name the steroid you take ? I can smell and taste only when I take corticosteroids, but ENT suggests therapy can not last more than 10 mgs per day for 5 days, you are talking about 60 mgs per day for two weeks , isn't it too much ?

Hi i can't remember the exact taper but it starts out with 60 mg of prednisone then down to 20 mgs over 2 weeks. Your ENT will know how to pace it. At the same time do the neilmed rinse with Budesonide vile 2 times per day then keep up with the rinses after the steroid run. I swear it's a miracle. I had completely lost smell and taste 3 years. Had taken prednisone and it didn't work. I think the megadose of prednisone shrunk the polyps then the rinses made them disappear. I only rinse once per day now and it's still going strong. Good luck!

Hello, I just had a miracle happen. I am able to smell again. I lost my smell last March after doing antibiotics for sinus and went to an ENT. He looked up my nose with a light and said he saw nothing and lots of people at my age lose their sense of smell. I looked into natural remedies. I did castor oil. I put one drop warm castor oil up each nostril twice a day for a week.  2 days later I started smelling again. I am still kind of in disbelief and am soooo thankful. Give it a try. Good luck. Carol
