Loss of strength in my bad leg.

Hi all, ive started having physio on my leg and couldnt believe how weak it has become. Guess ive been protecting it and using my good one without realising?

Basically she got me to lay on my back and lift my bum off the mat using each leg. My right one did it fine but my left just started shaking.

Shes given me some exercises to strengthen it so hopefully will help.

At the moment im still going to the gym just cycling and some light exercises but im worried im going to make it worse?

My limping seems to have got alot better and the pain is quite light. Only time it gets painful is if i rotate my leg inwards or outwards...then it feels if ive been shot.

I know its going to get alot worse over time but is this normal?

Thanks Scott

How many weeks post-op are you? How much walking are you doing, and is that with aids or without? Walking is pretty much all that is needed to bring a hip back to strength in most cases. I've heard so many cases on the forum where people have been hurt by PT rather than helped.

I had rthr on 25th September 2015. Physio after 5 weeks really made my leftt hip so painful that I couldn't do any exercises apart from the ones given by pt in hospital without excruciating pain. At 6/7 week check up my surgeon said left hip is very weak I can't weight hear without crunching in the joint & pain. Listen to ur body. If ur in pain don't do it. Only do what u can. Can u swim & exercise in water maybe? Btw I'm in 29th January for lthr can't wait to be painfree. Hopefully ur not ready for that yet but take it easy & don't push yourself too hard.

    Hi Scott,

I just looked at your previous post and I understand that you are actually pre-op, right ?

I had PT prior 1st surgery and was in so much pain after the exercises that I stopped - Not sure if I made it worse, it did not make me feel better -

If cycling and the light exercises feel good, just do them - when it hurts, stop !

Pretty normal that with rotations your hips will be painful - that is why you are a candidate for THR surgery ---

    take  care

Ok thanks Renee, will try to keep going with the exercises. Like I said its a bit worrying how weak the leg has become.

I thought if the muscles are stronger it will put less pressure on the hip?
