Loss of taste - did you stop using Terbinafine immediately ?

Hi ,

Been on Terbinafine for just on 8 weeks now for a fungal toe nail infection . Came across this forum after searching for loss of taste side effects . Around a week ago I noticed a loss of taste . Interestingly , my loss of taste seems at odds with most peoples experience whereby it seems to be savoury rather than sweetness loss of taste .Still not a pleasant experience .

My dilemma is that there has been a big improvement in the infection for the first time in years . However , my gut instinct is stop straight away , but would be interested to hear if anyone carried on and where there any further consequences ?

I stopped immediately after six weeks of use. I am now on my 11th week since I stopped & am just getting sweet taste back finally. If I were you I would definitely stop immediately. There are reported cases of people who don't get their taste back. Just my thoughts but I would not risk it. There are other ways to deal with the fungal infection.

Thanks for the reply Andrew .

Yes , I stopped immediatly after a bit of consideration . Like you say , not really worth it for a mainly cosmetic problem .

Glad you're starting to get your taste back . Looks like I'll have a while before my taste starts to return .

Your taste will probably return quicker than mine. I am 66 with a low BMI. Younger people with more meat on their bones are not as severely affected, from what I have read. It is a miserable situation to live with but I guess we can thank God it's not permanent. Hope you recover quickly.

Just an update on my taste loss .

Just on about 5 weeks now since I snoticed my loss of taste , and happy to say it's pretty much returned ( 4 weeks after stopping the terbinafine ) . Hard to say at what percentage , but would guess around the 90% mark .

From the various forums I've looked on , looks like I've been fairly lucky to get my taste back so quick .

What I would say , if anyone has lost heir taste and do get it back , it's helpfull to others if you can post updates on when your taste did return . Plenty of people post about losing their taste asking for guidance, but not many do updates on when their taste actually returned .

Anyway , good luck to anyone suffering from this .
