Lost motivation to follow gluten free diet

I was diagnosed with coeliac disease 10 years ago, and since diagnosis had followed a strict gluten free diet. However, I have recently lost all motivation to follow my diet and have started regularly eating gluten again. I have not seen my gastroenterologist or dietician in the 10 years since I was diagnosed as a child, and I think that I need reminding of the seriousness of the gluten free diet but I feel completely unmotivated to talk to anyone about it, as I know my doctor would not understand. Has anyone else had similar problems? Now that I am eating gluten again my weight has become very low (under 50kg, I'm 5 ft 6) but I am really struggling to care about the diet. Any advice much appreciated

oh Amy, this is SERIOUS. i was only diagnosed coeliac last April. i kept getting really poorly. the problem you're got is you'll undo all the fantastic work you've done in 10 years. i wonder if you're bored like me? are you part of coeliac uk or anything, that's of course if you live here. regardless you need to urgently see your doctor, one you can trust and just explain, it's a lapse and you wouldn't be human if you didn't do this every now and again. i desperately want to heel and to feel well, but like you my diet is bland, boring and rubbish really. it's not insurmountable i don't think. i have the added difficulty that i am also veggie and have recently discovered i'm allergic to beans and pulses. i am now going to see a specialist dietitian. good luck seek help before it's too late. 50kg is too light, i am 5ft 1 and 55kg! i'm worried i'm too heavy, do you want some of my weight? take care, it's not easy and i am not going to tell you off/what to do or criticise you, it will make you feel worse!!! you have 1 life - enjoy i but safely!

From my more limited experience (one year since diagnosis as an adult):

    • ask to be referred to a dietician and talk to them, and
    • join Coeliac UK, read their advice, use their mentors, and make contact with other people in the same boat
    • Don't give up - the long term risks are not worth it
    • Best of luck,

Due to my late diagnosis I developed cancer entirely related to coeliac disease - I am only here today the extensive cancer treatment I have had, which has been much worse than following a gluten free diet.

So if you want to lose all your hair, have needles and PICT lines stuck in your chest, have radiotherapy and surgery ...

What can I say, it isn't worth it.
