Lovely Hippies I need your advice about christmas please.... :0

I have a dilemma....please advise if you have a moment...

My consultant has said I can have my hip replacement at the beginning of Dec (as my three month wait is up after the steroid injections) but will it completely ruin any chances of me enjoying my christmas with my baby girls? I will be approx 3 weeks into it all, so not sure how I will be. Every christmas is precious when they are young... but I will have plenty of support over christmas from my husband will be home and friends and family who will all be on holiday and around (thus making it easier)

Or

Do I keep taking the morphine, even though it isn't working so well this week and I am back to being up alot in the night and now need to increase my dosage. I am worried the pain relief after the operation won't work as well if I need to keep taking more and more morphine now. I will have the op in Jan, but won't have the same level of support....

What would you do?

I agree with all the comments so far Rose. If it was my choice to have it in early December. I'm almost 8 weeks post op & the first 2 weeks were the hardest. But there was none of the previous joint pain just the scar healing, bruising & swelling. After 2weeks each day got better & by 4 weeks I was using 1 crutch around the house. My husband was home for 1week & half when I got home from hospital & then was away for the next 2 weeks as he works away. It sounds like u will have plenty of help during the Christmas period so Id go for it. U will be amazed how u are joint painfree immediately. Good luck with Ur decision x

I am really surprised with the posts, I thought everyone would say it would be too much with christmas and recovering from such major surgery, but most seem to think I will manage... I feel a little more confident booking it earlier now.

I'd do it!! The pleasure of Christmas will Spur you on & everyone else can do all the work you can just Enjoy. Xx

Thanks Gabby, you are quite right! Will I still be able to enjoy it do you think? x

      Just go for it!

I'd go for it, if you're in England and the junior doctors strike as planned, it might be later anyway. However it works out I wish you the best. I'm at 5 weeks after and would have had it done sooner if possible.

That is reassuring thanks Alan, it takes some courage to go ahead but I am really desperate now.

I'd go for it Rose. 100% I would. Another bonus is that you won't spend your Christmas thinking about having to have a major op soon after Christmas, it will all be behind you and yr'll be well on yr recovery road smile

That is a good point! At least I will be well by the spring! And not another summer inside as I can't walk very far.

Hi I'm in the same position as you, got a call today with my op date 9th December. Secretly wanted it after Xmas as I've struggled for so long what difference would another month make! I've been squeezed in as urgent and will be having complicated surgery using doner bone from the bone bank 😳 I'll be non weight bearing on the new hip for up to 3 months, won't know till after the op. We have a weekend away planned and I've not even started Xmas shopping!! Feel sick with nerves!!

Do they ring you with an appointment? I thought they sent out a letter. They used to anyway. What syrgery or you getting done? My thr that i will be getting done isnt simple either haahha

Suppose it depends, they were trying to fit me in as urgent so contacted me as soon as a slot was available.

I'm having a thr but my femur is too worn away so will need a bone graft. I had hip surgery as a child and have had severe arthritis for many years! I'm still working even though I can barely walk and the pain is awful but I've never really known any different! Just want to be able to walk without a limp and sleep well!!

      What are you having done?

Vicki I know just how you are feeling. It is literally sickening the worry, but it does pass. I was terrified, literally shaking with fear with my first operation date, after a few days it did subside and I didn't exactly glide into the hospital, but I was so much more calmer than I imagined I would be. It is natural to be afraid, but you really will be fine, as all the hippies on here will verify.

My fear has gone now, because my originial op was cancelled very last minute and the disappointment was so acute that it has annilhilated all fear!

Your operation sounds more complex, so I am guessing you must really need it as an urgent. At least it is over the winter and three months will come and go in no time.

Christmas movies, and chocolates and lots of days in bed might be the order of the day for December and someone else cooking this christmas!

On line shopping is the way forward next day, ideally already wrapped or gift boxed and you can get the xmas shopping done in a day if you need to.

Keep in touch with everyone on here, they are such a brilliant bunch and will support you and your worries all the way x

Im having a hip replacement but im getting my hips moved 3/4cm down. My joint is fused to the bone so i dont actually have a hip socket or joint bone. I have my own discussion page on here with my xray on and stuff if you wish to know more. this will be my 10th op but i think only 5th on my hips. But thats a lot in 19 years. Hospital told me i had to leave work and were making me a priority so i wonder if in waiting for a letter or a phone call....

Thankyou so much, it's nice to know others feel the same. It's something I've put off for years and have refused to let it stop me doing anything. I work for the nhs and did a 12 hour night shift last night. I can barely walk properly and limp like crazy but don't want to give up! Anyway have decided to finish now till I'm fully recovered and try to look after myself ready for the op.

Gosh that sounds awful. You poor thing. You definitely need that operation christmas or no christmas.

My brother is on the urgent list, going in on Tuesday and he had a phone call from the hospital. I am not sure they send out letters anymore

My what a healthy family we are!!!! xx

That sounds awful, think your situation is different to mine. I also have quite a leg difference though and there's a risk my femur may need to be shortened once the hips back where it should be to prevent nerve damage. Hopefully this won't happen!

Its good you can work. I tried to walk to the bus stop yesterday with a slightly heavy bag and literally nearly collapsed. I was in so much pain. I was employed by debenhams and by my third day i was in so much pain i literally broke down in tears. Thats when the hosoital told me i couldnt work in anything like that so now i have very few choices. This problem is starting to ruin my life. At 19 i dont want to be pushing my life away because i know ill bd in pain. Its very difficult and getting worse each day.but im glad to hear your still doing well. My discussion group is called THR and reconstruction. It will be on the discussion board somewhere if yoy want to look

It is good that you have finished, I don't know how you managed 12 hours it must be terrible. Ghastly. I do know how you feel about not giving in. I am not ready to stop living my life etiher, and it does make you feel so old and infirm doesn't it!!

Now you can put your leg up, rest and do some on line xmas shopping and get ready for christmas and prepare for your operation. Not having the pressure of work will help your pain no end, and you can focus on what you need for the next few months.

Sarah, I didn't realise you were so young. Yes it is a very big deal for everyone but especially someone as young as you.

Try not to worry about your job prospects for the moment, you will have plenty of opportunities when you are better to find something you really like.

Are you trying to manage without pain relief is not a good idea? Can you book an app to see your doctor? They can give you some medication if you tell them what you told us, and it is free, I have just checked so you will be fine to go and pick it up.

Secondly do you have some support? Family and friends?

You will be better once the operation has taken place, you won't always feel like this. There are lots of lovely people on here who will help you through this, so you have come to the right place.

Yeah im going to ring the doctors tomorrow and see about other pain killers. And yeah iv got my fiance and family supporting me. I hope once the op is done that i will be able to lead a more normal and natual life and move towards the job i am aiming for

You will definitely Sarah, this is just a (very painful) blip. Am glad you have a lovely fiance! x

That's awful for you, I'm 45 and had all my surgery when I was 7. I struggle when I carry anything heavy and have had to work hard to make sure I don't put weight on! I have to keep active or I seize up. My consultant is surprised I've carried on working and even still walking!

I'll have s look at your page. My X-Ray didn't look any worse than anyone needing a thr but the ct scan showed the absence of the back of my femur. It's such a nuisance isn't it!

Wishing you good luck with your surgery. It must be awful at such a young age.
