Low blood pressure following TKR and patella resurfacing

For the past 5 years I have been on medication for high blood pressure. Just over 3 weeks ago I had a TKR and as my blood pressure was low after surgery, they took me off my medication. I have been told to take my BP daily at home to monitor it and it remains a low/normal for someone my age (111/72 this morning). Naturally, i am delighted not to have to take my pills at the moment but was wondering why this has happened and if anyone else has had the same issue. Is it likely to remain low or go up again? I have also lost 8lb in weight...again i'm thrilled about this though don't hold out any hopes for the weight to stay off once I've recovered. I am making a good recovery and walking without my crutches a nd as far as I know I didn't require a transfusion during surgery.

Hi jackie , so glad ive seen your post . I have had high BP for thr last 2-3 years which i take medication for. I had a TKR 5 weeks ago and my BP also went low/normal so they stopped it but i restarted on leaving hospital. I have had a few faint episodes since which i didnt think much of it but then i took my BP and it was low which could explain the reason. Im just waiting to see the docs so will mention this . Cheerds

It may be a continuing reaction to the anaesthesia, or pain meds, loss of fluids, the trauma etc. But as I'm not a medic, you are best asking a doctor on this one. Meanwhile, take care when getting up quickly, or standing for long spells, eat little and often, get enough fluids, take everything carefully as you have been through a lot. Good luck with healing and recovery.

I had prostate surgery last June and in November. Got a infection was in hospital for a week in June as well. My blood pressure was low when I was in there the whole time. Didn't need my meds either. Don't know why. Nurses thought it was wired. Most ppl there pressure is up from the trauma etc. Could have been lower from the meds helping me relax. No idea.

I go back to see the surgeon in 2 weeks, so it will be interesting to see what he says. My blood pressure remains 'normal' even though I have reduced my medication. Did you see your doctor Sarah and what did he say? My GP didn't seem concerned nor gave me any explanation. Yes, I was going dizzy and light headed before they took my off my pills while I was still in hospital. At one point I thought I was going to faint. Fortunately a nurse was with me at the time.

Be careful. Took me off mine. Was fine for a month or so. Couple days ago went to my knee docs . They took my blood pressure. Was 155/106. They wouldn't let me leave til it went down. They called my docs office. Back on meds now.
