Low ferritin, elevated Tsat

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this list and have found the discussions I've read through very helpful. I was diagnosed with hemochromatosis two years ago. I have had phlebotomies and recently my ferritin is low but my Tsat is elevated. I just moved and I have a new hematologist, and he doesn't want to do a phlebotomy because of my low ferritin. However, I have such fatigue and brain fog. I am wondering if anyone is familiar with this situation and could recommend anything I could do to feel better. Thanks.

I also was diagnosed last year, had 1yr of weekly plebs, my ferritin went down to 39 then went up to 44 but my ts crept up again to 88% from 44% so I’ve had 2x phlebs 3 was apart and have an apt end of June for consultant to check. He said he wanted to see if after the phlebs it brought it down again as had no idea why it shot up? So waiting to find out results , I’ll have a blood test week before I see him. I do have cirrhosis caused by HH but that was stable . I’ll let you know asap. I have bit of brain fog, forget words to use in chat sometimes but I don’t worry too much and I explain to clients that it happens but not too much of a problem. My joints ache though especially hands and get a little tired at times but happy enough.

My TS% eventually come down after continuing with 3 monthly venesections even when my ferritin was about 24-27.  The ferritin does not reduce very much if at all, but the TS% does.  It has taken many years for this to start working for me.

Also having 1 x 100mg aspirin has made a huge impact on how I feel.  It is like it cleared out the cells with stagnant iron deposits - I felt lighter, walked faster and get more done in a day.

CoQ10 and Vit E are recommended to help repair the damaged mitochondria caused by long term high TS% - see Prof Pierre Brissot's research team's publications.

Thank you so much. I didn't know about the CoQ10 and vitamin E. Very helpful!

this can happen to some people i know they state that when levels come down you should be better but the truth is there is groups that do feel worse.

some times this can just be a phase while the body adjusts

its worth getting your vitamin levels checked this tends to happen when people have low vitamins especially something like vit d

Thank you for your reply. My vitamin D level was tested recently and it was quite low so I have started taking a supplement.

I found Vit D tablets did not work for me.  My dr suggested a practitioner's brand Vit D3 drops, and they showed immediate results in my blood levels.

Good to know. My doctor gave me something called Replesta, which is a wafer with Vit D3. I haven't been retested since she gave it to me a couple of months ago.
