Low neutraphyl count Hydroxychloroquine

Posted , 5 users are following.

I am 71 and have had Rheumatoid since 1988. Had various treatments over the years. I have been on hydroxychloroquine for about 8 years. One tablet a day up until just over a year ago when it flared up and I have been on two since then. Recent blood tests showed my neutraphil levels were just under half of normal. At my check up specialist reducd the dose back to one and asked for another blood test. This one was down to 15% of normal.

Has anyone else had this problem. It is pretty scary and I am under instruction about seeking urgent help in case of infection.

Thanks for reading

    Hi

    only just seen this.

Not the same situation as you but I did have very low neutrophil count after having a biologic for first time. The rheumy nurse phoned to check I didn't have an active infection( chest, urine , gut) my GP was not phased by it at all and said he d seen lower! ( I had asked him to check if I had a chest infection but I didn't)

As I understand it,and how it was explained to me, is that  the low neutrophil count is as a result of suppressing the immune system, which in turn suppresses our auto immune RA response.

As we then have reduced capacity to fight infection we have to be on the alert to go to gp quickly for antibiotics if we have sign of infection . I have been instructed to do that since taking any DMARDS ( of which hydroxychloroquine is one) So I think this is parr for the course if that any consolation. I guess they will closely monitor your levels.
