Low progesterone?

Hi,

Apologies in advance for the long post but I thought I'd write in here as I don't know where else to place my problem. I'm a 27 year old woman and have had the copper coil in for approx. 1.5 years due to fact that I had a lung clot 3 years ago. I was told that my periods would be heavier and longer but I thought that I could deal with that instead of having hormones in my body.

However since November last year I have noticed every month around the same time about 10 days before my period starts I get really bad PMS - bouts of crying over nothing, an extremely low mood where I don't want to do anything, terrible irritibility, extreme fatigue were I have to go lie down, foggy thinking and confusion, severe cramps (which result in me bending over in agony and having to breathe through them), and bleeding for 12-14 days!!

It all came to a head in Feb/March when I was under a lot of stress in work as I'm in the final few months of my PhD and went to the doctor and burst out crying. She prescribed me sertraline straight off, which I took for 6 days but had to stop because I had such a bad reaction to it. However, I feel that there is something else such as hormone imbalance going on with me as I do have brief relief from these symptoms and feel normal for approx 5 days during my 28 day cycle but because my periods are so long and close together I'm nearly always experienceing these symptoms. Also, I have a great life and this is so out of character for me to be so down and my stress has eased off from work too. I don't want to be on anti-depressants - there must be an underlying cause!

My question is has anyone ever experienced any of these symptoms and  have they used progesterone to try rebalance estrogen dominance? Either by use of the mini pill or switching to the mirena coil? These are ok for women who have had previous clots.

Your suggestions are all welcome - I feel like I'm going mad inside my own body and it's not usually me!

Thank you smile

      Hi caroline19506,

That's ok and thank you for your reply. This thought has run through my head but I'm just not sure if my symptoms are due to the effects of the copper coil as I was warned of heavy and longer periods. I have an appointment on Wednesday with the doctor who inserted the coil but because the doctors are so pro-LARC I reckon she will say to keep it in but I literally can't go on like this any longer.

hi.  I am not on hrt myself as yet, but you might want to read this article I found, about progesterone.  I cannot put the link on here but will message it to you if you want to read it.  It is a very interesting article on progesterone.

I was very sensitive to progesterone, including the Mirena coil.  I felt the difference as soon as the coil was removed.

Eventually I had a hysterectomy. I now take buckets of estrogen, no progesterone, and feel much better.

    Hi Murray Tof,

My suggestion is to do a hormonal test and see your hormone levels. I would as well see a gynecologist who specializes as a Dr.

Be on top of your health no one else will. Push to get the answers to be healthy and happy.

    Good luck.

Now what I'm about to say may not be your problem at all, but.... everything you said is the same thing I went through. I'm now 67 years old. When I was in my mid-40's, my periods were awful, same as yours (long periods, severe cramps, lower back hurting, knees hurting, laying on a heating pad every night, nervous, crying). My pap smears were ok, everything looked just fine, doctor said no problems....I went on with these symptoms for a few years, then my periods changed and I would have a period for about 5 days, it stopped completely for a couple days then one huge flood that would almost saturate my slacks and within 30 minutes I would go from a flood to nothing. Then one day I got up feeling like I was about to start my period, but my period wasn't due until the next week, I went to the bathroom and it was brownish. I called my doctor and he had to come in to get checked out. He sent me to the hospital to have a test run (can't remember what they called it --sonigram, ultrasound - can't remember). It turned out to be endometriosis. My OBGYN prescribed strong hormones, thinking it might get rid of it. Nope, by the 3rd month I was just the same and one day I was walking in the parking lot when all of a sudden I felt like someone hit me in the lower back with a hammer. I almost fell to my knees, looked around and there was no one there. I called the doctor the next day and told him I'm ready for a complete hysterctomy "now."  Had it done a few weeks later and after leaving the hospital I broke down and started crying because I FINALLY knew what it was like to feel good again. I've never regretted it. You might ask your doctor about it.

I'm sure that you are not having an early menopause of anything that would necessitate a hysterectomy.  It sounds like a hormonal problem.  You are doing the right thing by seeing your GP.  Don't be brushed off - ask for some tests to be done or referred to a gynaecologist or both.  Don't suffer like this, you don't have to.  I hope that you are sorted out soon smile

OMG...it's like listening to me when I was 29 and I am 64 now, this post will be as long as yours so apologies from me also.

I was exactly as you are, I was sterilised at 29 but I became pregnant 9 months later, it was ectopic, I had a termination but 9 months later I went into a deep depression although I was prone to it previously without using anything or understanding why, my doctor prescribed valium and librium which I was on for 18 months but still feeling rubbish so my philosophy was, if I feel no better then it's not what I need, I broke down at work and following a long chat with the nurse in the medical centre at the fantastic company where I worked, she said, 'you are not depressed, you have a hormone imbalance' so I went back to my GP and explained, expecting him to dismiss it but in fact he prescribed Progesterone Suppositories, I used the first one that evening and never took another anti depressant and haven't since. I have had to ask for them at different times during the years, eostrogen dominance is so debilitating, I think there are thousands of women on anti depressants when they have a hormone imbalance but it's not generally taken seriously and not tested for each individual. I always knew when I needed it and felt immediately better in my mind and body after I had used it. I now need Vitamin B12 and some of the symptoms are very much akin to the Oestrogen dominance so worth trying that too perhaps, it's quite safe to use because if you don't need it your body gets rid of it. Good Luck and push for the Progesterone, not in a cotraceptive form but as a standalone remedy.

Thank you so much for your reply. It's comforting to hear that someone else has had a similar experience. The doctors are pushing ADs on me and it's just not me - I don't know how I could all of a sudden have depression in the space of a couple of months when I'm normally so happy (work stress aside). I'm unsure if I want to keep the copper coil as my periods are 12-14 days long, which is annoying and before the coil my periods were only 5-7 days long. I'm going to push for an answer and tests at my appointment on Wednesday and will definitely mention the suppositories. Did they ever have an effect on your bleeding like shorten it or was it just for the symptoms?

It was for the symptoms only but I did have a coil at that time, many years ago now and didn't like it or the pill which is why I opted and fought for sterilisation at 29. (I'd had 2 children by then). I don't even know if Cyclogest are still on the market. I live for the most part in Spain now and when I had my bloods taken the whole gambit of hormone levels were tested and discussed.

You sound as though you know your own body very well, as I did and AD's are not always the way forward so argue your case until all avenue's are exhausted, good luck and hope you soon feel better.
