Low Testosterone

Hello,

I am 30 years old, Male, 6ft4 and weight 220lbs. I have a bodyfat percentage of about 18%.

I have long suspected that I suffer from low testosterone, partly due to very poor muscle gains despite working very hard, but mainly because I have suffered from low mood, low energy and low libido for years.

I have had 3 blood tests done over 2 years and all 3 tests came back with a testosterone result of around 11 nmol / 320 Ng/dl.

But my UK NHS doctor thought that level was fine and wasn’t that helpful. But I am not convinced.

But to be fair, i didn’t discuss my symptoms and was mainly there for another reason and just requested a blood test.

Do you think that I should go back and have a proper discussion? Is my testosterone level low?

Thanks

Of course you should. Low testosterone causes a number of health issues. You should know what the reference range is from your copy of the test results. Even if in a low range, this does not help.

11 nmol/L is borderline bottom. Are you experiencing 'man boobs'? This happened to my husband after having chemo and radium therapy (his pituitary gland was affected) and his testosterone was about 13. You should ask for your pituitary gland hormones to be tested. Another hormone can affect testosterone.

You should tell your dr all symptoms and may have to be assertive, or see another dr. My husband is the same and sits mute about his problems.

In Australia though, men have to be prescribed by a urologist or endocrinologist to get testosterone therapy. My husband has 3 monthly injections.

BTW, haemochromatosis is a hormone thief too, so Iron Studies tests should be done. These include not just serum iron, but ferritin and transferrin saturation %.

Alot of blood tests are worked out on the average of whole populations, so in regards to hormones it is especially helpful to look at the individuals because what one one person might be ok with another feels really awful. I think go back and tell him your symptoms for sure.

Also sometimes the symptoms you describe can be due to depression, even stress can affect us in some of the ways described. Either way don't suffer in silence. Best of luck
