Lower back and leg pain

Hi all I am just new to this site I’m 41 year old male I have suffered lower back pain and sciatica since i was 18 years old. Now January 2017 I suffered a severe spasm with right sciatica I could barely walk but got myself to A&E eventually and the doctor referred me for a MRI and to see a back specialist to get it sorted once and for all anyway it took about 5 weeks to get a MRI. So when I went for my MRI my back was in what I say a good place and also when I seen the doctor I had barely no nerve pain so he told me I had a slight disc buldge that 70% of people have over the age of 25 from what I remember and I had lost the curvature of my lower back slightly. Cut a long story short I done physio at home stretches ect and started the gym but still had allot of pain stiffness ect in my lower back and it got to a point where I couldn’t go to the gym because I had allot of pain not down my leg though but I was still able to be quite active fishing golf now and then DIY . So about July 2018 we got a big job in at work there were lots of issues as it had been rushed into production and me being a quality inspector I had to check packed product this involved allot of bending over for long periods of time sometimes a week to two weeks the same thing every day so by December 2018 my back was in allot of pain most of the time and my body was out of line I had a limp in my right leg but I carried them i slipped goin into work 3 days before we broke up for Christmas holidays and really jarred my back and I instantly got shooting pain in my lower back down my leg to the outside of my calf to the inside of my foot but I still carried on until I woke up on Christmas Eve morning and had so much pain in my right leg and right buttock my lower back was killing me 7/10 for pain and by Boxing Day I couldn’t stand on my right leg it was burning like it was getting pulled from my body I was crying with the pain fortunately I had some very strong pain killers and some nerve blockers sorry about the spelling but yeh I lay in bed until the doctors re opened and I got some gabapentin codine and paracetamol this relieved the pain about 50% I forgot to mention I had urinary retention for about 3 months being a male I was stupid not to get that seen to so I went back to the doctors as the only relief was lying down and I explained all my symptoms and they leaded to me being red flagged for cauda equina I was in shock I was in the MRI within 3 days and at a neurosurgeon within a week thankfully it wasn’t that but in fact my L4/L5 disc was severely herniated causing numbness leg pain urinary problems but also L3 L4 and L5 discs deteriorated quite bad for my age so 4 weeks later I had the disc dissection surgery so after the surgery the surgeon told me I had allot of scarring at the shoulder of the nerves through many disc bulges or herniations the disc had spilled out and wrapped around the nerve sack and the operation took 3 hours instead of 1 1/2 and he was optimistic when I first seen him he told me he didn’t have much hope for my future nice man ha anyway my pain was minimal after op but I was on morphine for 7 days along with my normal medication of 1800mg gabapentin 120mg codine and 2 paracetamol 4 times a day I don’t take the morphine but I’m still on the other tried to reduce but getting allot of leg pain still and my lower back is just very weak and keeps locking up like it’s goin to snap if I move this can happen at any time I was told not to do any physio until I had my 3 month post surgery appointment this was today 22/05/2019 I have been walking around now for about 1 month but not far and have been doing slight exercise every morning it hasn’t helped at all so moving forward he is making me an appointment for physio and another MRI and I might need more surgery to fit a nerve stimulator but he said there is nothing he can do for my lower back pain my doctors are useless they do nothing I really need some advise is there anything that can be done for my situation I don’t have-private healthcare I use the NHS can anybody please give me some advise I have been to a chiropractor before my surgery and he said he couldn’t help me

Steven, I'm so sorry about all the suffering you've gone through and you're still at such a young age! I've only recently been dealing with lower back pain and leg numbness and it's driving me crazy. I've been doing physical therapy and recently had an epidural injection (not sure any of it is helping). There are a lot of videos on you tube that you might want to check out, pay attention to the physical therapist (Bob and Brad have good careful advice). I so wish I could offer you some guidance. Take care...

Thanks i am starting a 3 month intensive physio this month with a specialist back pain physiotherapist hopefully she can get me back to a level where i can get back to some sort of normal life i am still waiting for another MRI to see how much scarring there is to my nerve as the neurosurgeon thinks i need a operation to insert a nerve stimulator to block the leg pain but that is hopefully a last resort as it can take upto 2 years for the nerve to settle down. good luck with you and your issues thanks for the reply
