Hi,i just wondered if anyone had had this problem, and could tell me what it might be-im nearly 6 months away from a right hip replacement, but i cant see thats anything to do with it-i have a lower back pain, gets worse the more i do,its slightly right of centre, and is worse when ive been bending-sometimes its sharp enough to make me squeak(loudly!),and seems to lock sometimes so i cant stand straight up.i also feel a "crunching"which is quite alarming.has anyone any ideas before i force myself to visit the doctor?thanks in advance, pam x

It can defiantly have something to do with your hip. It could also be the other way around (lower back pain causing hip pain). But since I'm sure you've had the X-Rays to positively identify a joint problem in your hip it is most likely that the pain in your lower back is referred pain from your hip. Because you will be laying on your back on an operating table for a while it can cause more pain and even spasms in your lower back. So, it is not only advisable but critical that you see the surgeon (or at least talk with him/her) about this BEFORE the day of your surgery. Good luck on your surgery. I hope your convalescence goes well. BTW you will probably be given some pain meds after surgery. Pain meds cause constipation and hip surgery can make it uncomfortable to sit on the stool so I would suggest that you take stool softeners or better still take Meralax (polyethylene glycol 3350) Both of these will keep you regular.
