Lower back pain, hips sitting out of line

Hi,

Looking for a little advice. I slipped on ice and tensed to balance myself. I had pain in my lower back which became much worse the next day. I moved around normal for the next 2 weeks but stopped going to the gym. As I was feeling better I attempted to move a box only around 15kg and I got a sharp pain in my lower back. Looking in the mirror that night, I seen that my hips looked way off to the right so I decided to go see the doctor. They said I had just strained a muscle and I had to give it a further 4 days to see if it got better. I have now left it for over 2 weeks as I thought it would sort its self out. I do still have pain but I don't seem to be as far out of line as I was before (please see pictures I took today of me attempting to stand perfectly straight) .My lower back feels very weak just now and I get pain with small things like lifting my legs to get out of the car. I have no numbness at all.

I was thinking that some good stretches may help if it's just a muscle problem. I have marked the second picture of my back with a white dot showing the area where I mainly get the pain. I do also get some pain in my hips, but not as much. It might sound strange, but the feeling is as if it needs cracked back in to place.

I appreciate any advice you may have.

Thanks for your reply Joanne. Yeah I think I am going to have to go back in the next few days. The other weird thing that's happened which I don't see how it could possibly be related (I have heard that the back can cause pain anywhere), is my big toe on my left foot feels like it's been staved, and it also is slightly swollen. It seems strange, as I haven't done anything to it that would cause it to be sore.

To me - it definitely looks like something is wrong.  You look way unbalanced.  I think your doctor is following the standard protocol that most back pain sorts itself out after about 6 weeks and ignoring the obvious.  I wonder if you went to the ER if they would go ahead and take x-rays - if you can't get your GP to order X-Rays, you might be forced to take matters into your own hands. Th place you have marked is L4-L5 which is an area that is easy to injure.  Having weakness is a serious sign.  When I got hurt in a car accident, my GP wouldn't deal with me because it was a car accident, I didn't know where to go - so I went to Emergency Chiropractics.  For goodness sake, don't go there - they made me so much worse before I could finally get them to order an MRI and then we found out I had herniated discs and then they wouldn't touch me.  I think you should push hard to get an MRI done.  They will most likely do an x-ray first, but you really need to get an MRI done.  I agree with otherse - looks like you have a slipped disc and that is no joke. All I can tell you is that you have to be your own advocate to make sure you get the right tests and the right treatment.   Good luck to you!

      Hi Linda,

Thanks for your advice. I gave the doctors a call this morning hoping I would get an appointment today. The best they could do was book me in for an evening apointment 1 week from today as it's not an emergency. I will keep you updated on what they say next week.

*I am the original poster* Unfortunately I have had some trouble logging in here and so I have just made up a new account.

I went back to the doctors on the 30th of April, to let them know that my back had still not improved. The doctor says as I didn't fall, he doubts that this is anything other than muscle strain. He has provided me with a list of exercises to do to increase my back flexibility and to help stop my back pain.

So far the exercises don't seem to be helping much (I have been doing them for a full week now). I have noticed that long periods of sitting is not good for my back pain and it results in my hips being even more out of line. I was in the car a lot of Saturday and I noticed this.

I am wondering what your opinions are on my doctors views? Is he right to think it is only muscular because the back pain wasn't caused by a fall? It has been around 8 weeks now since I first hurt my back. It seems a long time for something simple like a muscle strain.

I have attached pictures of how my torso looks today (2 weeks after the pictures in my original post).

      Hey Gary,

I strained my lower back about 8 weeks ago, and as it has almost healed a couple of times, I have re-injured it 3 times, so i know the suffering this can bring.

Have you looked into a Chiropractor for this?  This seems like something they could help you with by doing manipulations.  I haven't visited one myself, but something looks out of alignment, not sure.
