Lower back pain ix months after THR

Posted , 10 users are following.

Hi,

Im in my early 20's and had both my hips replaced in May and Aug 2017. I have been diagonesed with a degenerative disease that worst affected my hips. So after doing a left and right THR my pain in the hips considerably reduced. But now I have this severe pain in my right lower back and it is driving me nuts.My Ortho asked me to be patient saying my body is trying to get adjusted to the new alignment and that is why you have this discomfort. It's been more than 2 weeks I still have this pain and it's worst affecting my day to day life. Please let me know the tips and suggestions that some of you followed to come out of this.

Many of us have pain as our bodies get used to the realigned posture after the op. In order to walk before hand the body compensates to move in a way that minimises the pain as far as possible. Additionally healing continues for at least a year if not two post op. so Try and be patient, though it may be worth keeping detailed notes of your pain pattern in relation to activity and rest to discuss at your next ortho appointment

    Dear Meenakshi

Have you considered seeing a good chiropractor to see what is going on with your your back? It sounds to me as if you could benefit.

    Cheers Richard

yes Richard. I have met both a physical therapist and my ortho surgeon. They have indicated its a back strain and suggested me few exercises to be followed. Its been about couple of weeks and still my pain is not subsided.

      Dear Meenakshi

That's not actually what I had in mind.  A Chiropractor will usually be able to set your back and other parts right.   I have had lingering back pain for several months along with shoulder pain and paid a visit to a chiropractor on Monday and am now so much better thankfully.

      Cheers, Richard

You have been walking in an unnatural way for so long, you are bound to feel some pains when you start walking correctly again.  You are re-using all those muscles correctly again. Patience is not something we find easy when in pain, I have had a carpal tunnel pain for 6 weeks now, and at last with the aid of a wrist brace that is now just beginning to subside, it all takes time.

Thanks Rocketman. Almost everyone suggested me to be patient. This pain had led to so much frustration that I had to post my problem here. But now could see that many like me are suffering with the same issues. Take care you too smile

    Hi meenakshi,

I’m sorry for the pain you’re experiencing.  I’m 13 weeks thru THR.  I continue to have pain, though it’s subsuded quite a bit.  If you are able to, continue with the exercises.  If you have trouble sleeping, if you are able to, switch from lying on your back to lying in your side, intermittently.  I take over the counter Tylenol, when I need it and my surgeon has prescibed oxycodone, which I took in my first month daily, but now when the pain gets worse, twice or three times a week.  I, myself, have gotten much better, but I still have a distance to go.  Hope this helps.

    Hello Meenakshi

I feel for you going through this pain. It does take time to settle down. My specialist recommended a physiotherapist who also showed me some light Pilates exercises to help with back pain. Now, with walking in a heated pool, doing the cat exercises (arching back) it really helps me.  Everyone is different though so you need to seek advice first.

After multiple visits with my ortho and physical therapists my lower back  pain is quite subsided now and not cured completely.I am not be to bend down or sit in a chair for a longer duration now. I have been doing all these without any difficulty until this back pain popped up. I am really thankful for all the suggestions given. Has anyone gone through the same difficulty?
