Lower back sciatic pain

Posted , 4 users are following.

I've had this for over 20 years. Sometimes it's worse than others. Lead a fairly active lifestyle. I see an osteopath regularly but having a nightmare with it at the moment. Literally can't sit down for more than a minute before it's agony. Walking and lying down is fine. Are there any effective painkillers I can get prescribed apart from the usual Ibruprofen?

Nope. And you should not be on an NSAID for more than 10 days. They'll eat through your stomach. You have to find the source of the pain and fix it...

    Sciatica

I've dealt with this for as long as I can remember but it's always been fixed (either immediately or within a few weeks) by chiropractic. However, there was that one time it needed surgical intervention. If you've exhausted all other modalities, it's time to see a neurosurgeon.

Osteo says no to surgery. Too invasive, expensive and risky.

I'm looking for a temporary pain relief that works when i get a flair up. Mine can be fine for months then something will set it off.

Unfortunately in the US you have to get a recommendation from your doctor to be referred to "Pain Specialists" or something, however Doctors are terrified of hearing the "P word" I've heard it called, asking for pain medications.

CHICO I have a question on the NSAIDS no more than 10 days or it will eat through your stomach, do you have a website / study you got this information from? I was taking pain medication for a herniated disc (similar to now) while I had my colostomy bag on, and I took them for months and months and when I did pre-colostomy-takedown surgery they did a colonoscopy and my sugeon was amazed with how clean and healthy my intestinal track looked.

So I am confused if this is something you have heard or believe, or if this is medical fact that can be cited, as I've cut down but taken painkillers for my sciatica for months as well and curious if my stomach is just slowly dying?

Hope you are able to find meds Will, its insane how difficult it is to get pain medicine anymore just to improve your quality of life.

"NSAIDs such as ibuprofen may cause ulcers, bleeding, or holes in the stomach or intestine."

That's from the federal Medline site. Just Google "NSAID stomach" and you can read all about the topic. Lots of articles from the fed to the Mayo clinic to WebMD and more. This is a well established result of taking NSAIDs for a long period of time. Yes, everyone is different and you may be less or more susceptible than others. I've always been told by my docs to avoid the issue by only using this drig class for 10 days or less.

The topical option is Voltaren Gel (diclofenac) up to 4X/day when needed.

Note: If the sciatica is caused by a spinal issue (disk degeneration, compression, bone spur, etc.), nothing will fix it but surgery...period. A neurosurgeon can order a CT/Myelogam with contrast...the "gold standard" spine test...to locate the exact problem and then give you a treatment plan. Or...you can live in pain the rest of your life. Choose wisely...

I'm in Wales, UK. We don't pay for our meds here. As far as I know, as long as you take NSAIDS with food and not on an empty stomach it's fine. My problem is, the NSAIDS don't seem to be making much difference.

Yeah only narcotic meds helped at least mentally tolerate and sometimes alleviate the pain, an epidural steroid injection helped a lot, but I still use some pain killers to keep the nerve calm while I do physical therapy to slowly heal.

I think NSAIDS are on par with a placebo for nerve pain, I need oxycodone for the really terrible pain, it still hurts but not quite as bad.

Perhaps you could get a prescription for muscle relaxants or some sort of benzo to take as and when you get a flare up. They certainly work well with the mental side of pain
