lowering simvastatin dosage

Posted , 3 users are following.

i have been taking simvastatin 40 mg 1/day for past 3 years.

My latest reading was 4.8, so I am thinking of halving dose to 20 mg.

GP told me a little while ago that 40 mg was preferred dosage!!

Anyone reduced their dosage, please ?

Hi Michael. I am no on 40mg after tryin 3 imes before but being defeated by severe muscle pain (which I read experts don't think exists). My doctor, too, said 40mg or 80mg are the standard doses.

Thanks for your reply: I just think that doctors do not want to take the responsibility of lowering dosage. No doubt they are 'bound' by 'n-i-ce 'guidelines and 'evidence-based' prescribing.

I do not really have any side-effects and with a latest low-reading [helped by diet also], it would be nice to be able to reduce dosage in view of Diabetes link : I am approaching borderline re blood sugar level

Hi michael. When i had a stroke mine wad 9,5 i have been on statins for 4 years its now 5,3 it wont go any lower but they want it down to 3,5 but i wont take more ther 20mg of atorvastatin because i had muscle problems on the higher dose. I think 5,3 is fine for me but i have put 3 stone on in 4 years.

Sorry about missing letters in my reply - it's my keyboard; maybe it needs statins.

hi michael 1952   i think my key board needs statins aswell it started last night. not sure why its alright again now, but i will have to get serviced. on a more serious note are you on simvastatin because i know if your on that 40mg is preferd. how ever with atorvastatin you can be on 20mg and it will do the same job with less side effects.... all the best.
