LP of the nails

A few weeks ago I had my thumb nail injected with steroid to see if it would arrest the development of LP.  It looks as though I do have some healthier nail growing and I am hopeful that this is really going to help.  I have a few more weeks to decide if I want to go ahead and have my other nails injected - this will be something I have to have done every 6 months.  Is anybody else receiving this treatment and, if so, what success have you had?

I need to have this done to my big toenails, which have been mostly gone since 2009.  What type of doctor did it?  Was it terribly painful?

My injections were done by a dermatologist.  I had a local anaesthetic injection into both sides of my thumb and, yes, this was quite painful but only for a short while.  They worked extremely well though and I didn't feel anything when the nail was injected.  Just so that you know what to expect, the whole nail and thumb up to the first joint turned completely white.  The anaesthetic wore off after about 2 - 3 hours leaving my thumb a little swollen and feeling as though I'd jammed it in a drawer.  However, it wasn't agony so don't worry about it.  I opted to have my nail done immediately it was suggested so that I didn't have time to think about it.  The thumb was tingly for a couple of days afterwards - a bit like pins and needles.  After 5 weeks, the new growth at the half moon certainly looks as though it is plumper and smoother so I will definitely have the rest done as all of my nails are now dying.  Let me know how you get on - please don't worry about having it done.  The dermatologist warned me it was going to be extremely painful and I was expecting something much worse than it turned out to be.  Good luck!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience.  I wanted to try this, but was worried about it (I'm a wimp)!

Thank you for posting about your nails.  I have LP/OLP and I my nails have ridges but I haven't lost any yet.  I did come close this summer as one of my thumb nails had a ridge so big I thought to open.  However for years my big toenails have been very curved and painful, as though they are ingrown.  I never connected this to LP/OLP as I only found out in 2013 I had it, but I now suspect I've had it much longer.  Did you have a problem with your toenails curving like mine?

Yes, my toenails are all shapes and sizes - some curve up and some curve down and some are half the size they were but I'm not really bothered by them as they don't give me any pain and they are rarely on show! My fingernails started out with ridges which, like yours, became pronounced.  In my case, they actually did crack open on the "peaks".  Unfortunately, the skin below them also cracked open and this is when the pain starts, especially if you get dirt, lemon juice, etc in them (as I do gardening for a living, it's impossible not to get them dirty even though I wear gloves all the time).  My nails are now so revolting that having them injected is something I am looking forward to.  It's either that or waiting until they have completed disappeared and just sticking false ones onto bare skin.  I have uploaded a photo of my thumb and two fingers.  You will see that the half moon of my thumb nail is starting to plump up and smooth out.  The other two fingers have deep fissures.  Most of my remaining nails are beyond this stage and just have a fine paper-thin covering of nail.  They are extremely sensitive and very painful if I accidentally catch the nail surface on something.  I keep reading in information about LP that it can spontaneously disappear but I don't know of anyone that this has actually happened to.  I also understand that, even if it does disappear, the nails do not grow back once they have completely died.  I don't know if you are actively seeking treatment for your nails yet but perhaps it would be advisable to make a start before they really deteriorate.  I wish I had been offered this treatment months ago as they are now pretty bad.  It may, of course, be that they don't offer the injections until it is obvious that the nails are going to deteriorate badly.

Oh, my, I am so sorry for your nail problem!  It makes me not want to even complain about my mouth.  My big toenails do hurt some but not to any extent.  Yes, LP/OLP can spontaneously disappear.  I have a good friend who had it for about two years and it went into remission.  That was over five years ago and she hasn't had it back.  I keep hoping that will happen for me.  I will pray it happens for you, too.  I can't imagine doing gardening for a living with your nails like that.  I do appreaciate the picture because it gives me an idea of what to watch for.  I am going to a dermatologist regularly so he keeps an eye on my symptoms.  Good luck to you and thanks for sharing.  Hugs.

I meant to say, too, that you are so brave for having the injections.  i don't know if I could do that, but I would I guess if it would help.
