LPR/Silent Reflux - desperately in need of a miracle. Has anyone recovered from this?

Hi - I'll be as brief as possible. For almost a year I have had symptoms which have worsened, starting with throat clearing and progressing to regular spiting out of white, frothy stuff, post nasal drip, lump in throat or sharp sensation, streaming or blocked nose and hoarseness. These are all unpleasant and irritating but because I talk for a living my work is becoming badly affected so it is now making me depressed and anxious as well. I was referred to ENT, had the camera up the nose and down the throat to rule out anything sinister and was given Omeprazole and Gaviscon Advance. No advice, no explanation. I had to find it all out myself. (and I'm not confident/assertive with docs, either).
The drugs haven't helped, I'd go so far as to say the reflux significantly worsened. I had faith in the Gaviscon Advance having read how it works but that hasn't made any difference either. I have monitored everything I eat and drink and can't find anything that triggers it with the possible exception of bread, and I may be grasping at straws there. Certainly coffee, alcohol, spicy food etc don't trigger it and ginger, acidophillus, apple cider vinegar don't help. It does seem to be cyclical - I'll have a week or so of decreased symptoms then it gradally works up again to two or 3 weeks of hell. No heartburn, and the reflux is almost always upright, no problems sleeping...just the other 17 hours a day! The ENT was brusque on my return visit and said that, aside from speech therapy, there was nothing more he could do for me. This can't go on, though. At it's worst it makes me tearful and desperate at work and speech therapy isn't going to stop me spitting up into a whole toilet roll each day, or reduce the other symptoms. I'm also worried my teeth will rot and I fear for my job. Has anyone experienced this with the same pattern/lack of triggers etc? I would love to hear any positive experiences that don't just repeat the same old same old, ie, raise the bed 6 inches, dos and donts with food etc.

I too have had LPR symptoms for over 17 years, now 37, started around age 20. Went through all the usual tests, ENT doctors (removed tonsils), allergists, dust mite proofing a house, giving up pets, actually had Nissan fundiplication surgery almost 8 years ago after a positive 24 hr ph study. Made things better but no cure, still needed to be on PPI's to keep things somewhat tolerable.
Most recently on a yeast free, dairy free, gluten free, sugar free diet, slowly getting better, but definitely not quick enough. It's been 5 months since things flared up, finally sleeping through the night without clearing throat and coughing all night, but still clearing all day long, with clear mucus coming out. PND on some days, but always clearing and coughing.
Going to continue with the natural diet, along with PPI once a day and gaviscon before bed. Also drinking alkaline water evamor 8.8 ph for additional help along with Probiotics, food enzymes, and additional digestive meds.
I will keep in touch on the eating for your blood type results.

One thing I am doing though after reading earlier posts is drinking water with a ph of 8. I make my own by adding a quarter of a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda to 600ml of water. I sip it during the day. Figure it can't do any harm. Also,I have made the massive decision to give up coffee!!

Since I last wrote on here I have had some progress. I was lucky enough to be referred to a superb, understanding gastroenterologist who has now referred me urgently to The Royal London hospital for tests to confirm I'm a candidate for fundoplication. This is not the outcome I was hoping for - who wants such a drastic operation that has only an 85% success rate and which seems to have a long (full) recovery time and long term consequences? However, my endoscopy showed significant bile reflux and hiatal hernia and the operation may be the only way to stop the bile, my current symptoms and further, even more seriousconsequences. The presence of so much bile is the reason why none of the treatments (prescribed, complimentary and lifestyle) have worked. Firstly, bile reflux is much less responsive to lifestyle and dietary changes; secondly because anything I take to reduce the acid part of my reflux simply allows the alkaline, but equally corrosive, bile to do its damage. My Gastroenteroligist says my symptoms are typical of his experience in this area and he is the first medical professional I have encountered in my two year nightmare who I have trusted or had confidence in. I had both an ENT and an NHS speech therapist tell me categorically that there is no such thing as non-acid reflux!
So, my next step is to have the tests at the Royal London and hope that I'm a candidate. I have a lot of questions before I actually agree to surgery but my gastro promised me he would refer me to a great surgeonwho knows what he/she is doing doing. When I asked what happens if the tests indicate surgery won't help, he said, 'Then we're in trouble.....but I'm confident that won't be the case'.
I think the best discovery tool is endoscopy. Too often this problem is treated by ENT but it seems that most people need to be tested too see what's causing the problem from lower down. If your symptoms are like mine, push for a gastro referral. Good luck and best wishes.

My Peptest package and my Alkaline drops just arrived in the post. I will do the test first and start drinking the alkaline water after.
Have been on PPI for two weeks now and have noticed a slight change in that the mucus seems to have
become a bit thinner and so easier to spit out ie I'm not having to hawk it up from my throat as
much to get it out, which makes the sound of throat clearing quieter, ie if I'm on the train or bus.
Also taking digestive enzymes and aloe vera juice and drinking green vege smoothies, as I have never liked
eaten any vegetables in the past, hence an acidic diet!
Will keep you all updated on any results or improvements.
Bye for now.

There seems to be a lot of trial and error with LPR.

My Peptest came back negative! What more can I say..?
Does anyone suffer from any Candida symptoms?
As I do ie, oral thrush and skin rash on elbows and legs and have researched that Candida
Albicans can cause acid or silent reflux together with PND which I suffer from too!
Have decided to get myself tested for this to find out if there's a link.
In the meantime, will continue taking my PPI meds, digestive enzymes and drinking Alkaline water etc..
Will keep u posted.

Hi Becks, did you figure out an answer concerning Candida and GERD/LPR? I'm thinking this is my underlying cause as well.
