LPR/Silent Reflux - desperately in need of a miracle. Has anyone recovered from this?

Hi - I'll be as brief as possible. For almost a year I have had symptoms which have worsened, starting with throat clearing and progressing to regular spiting out of white, frothy stuff, post nasal drip, lump in throat or sharp sensation, streaming or blocked nose and hoarseness. These are all unpleasant and irritating but because I talk for a living my work is becoming badly affected so it is now making me depressed and anxious as well. I was referred to ENT, had the camera up the nose and down the throat to rule out anything sinister and was given Omeprazole and Gaviscon Advance. No advice, no explanation. I had to find it all out myself. (and I'm not confident/assertive with docs, either).

The drugs haven't helped, I'd go so far as to say the reflux significantly worsened. I had faith in the Gaviscon Advance having read how it works but that hasn't made any difference either. I have monitored everything I eat and drink and can't find anything that triggers it with the possible exception of bread, and I may be grasping at straws there. Certainly coffee, alcohol, spicy food etc don't trigger it and ginger, acidophillus, apple cider vinegar don't help. It does seem to be cyclical - I'll have a week or so of decreased symptoms then it gradally works up again to two or 3 weeks of hell. No heartburn, and the reflux is almost always upright, no problems sleeping...just the other 17 hours a day! The ENT was brusque on my return visit and said that, aside from speech therapy, there was nothing more he could do for me. This can't go on, though. At it's worst it makes me tearful and desperate at work and speech therapy isn't going to stop me spitting up into a whole toilet roll each day, or reduce the other symptoms. I'm also worried my teeth will rot and I fear for my job. Has anyone experienced this with the same pattern/lack of triggers etc? I would love to hear any positive experiences that don't just repeat the same old same old, ie, raise the bed 6 inches, dos and donts with food etc.

Hi, this is in reply to Sonya and Peter,

Thanks for your input. I have suffered from high anxiety since being a child. The last 10 years Ive tried so many different therapies, bodywork, anti depressants, self medicating, meditation retreats, yoga, ayahuasca!

Many things have helped, but it seems even when I am feeling at by best, there is still a fair bit of discomfort, mainly lump in the throat and the tightness in the diaphragm.

The last few days I had a hideous bout of globus, really felt I coudlnt breathe at times, and wake up dry mouth and throat kind of stuck together. It was horrible, and my anxiety was very high. This is also when I found out about LPR, having thought the main cause of my globus was anxiety. It was interesting to think it may be silent reflux.

So yesterday, after little sleep and a hideous night, my throat was a mess. I went for a 2 hour deep massage. She worked on my neck and shoulders probably for over an hour. It was painful! Afterwards I was a different person, and the throat pain had gone from 80% to 10%, and stayed that way until now, as I slept well last night.

So is it still possible this could be LPR? If I can get that much relief from a massage, surely it means its muscular?

Does anyone know what the feeling of globus is when its related to LPR, because I cant find out, is it irritated nerve endings, swelling, psychological?

Anyway, its good to know relief can be had, but I cant exacty have a 2 hour massage every day!  I live in a mindful community in Thailand, its very supportive, we meditate and do yoga every day, work much less than back home, so IM in a good enviroment, but still the symptoms always return.

    Thanks again for everything guys.

    Alex

Hi, i'm sorry i cant answer your question as to what globus is when its related to LPR but i'd love to know too.

I have LPR and globus and i feel that if i could understand better whats going on it would help.

Like you i wonder what i'm feeling, is it that the muscles are bunched or mucous, although the ent man said the throat doesnt produce mucous itself.

Hope someone can answer your question

      Thanks shelley

Yeah it just feels so much like my muscles are contracted, but I cant seem to find the info anywhere as to whats going on when you have globus from LPR.

      Its easy to despair sometimes!!

      Thanks

Hi Alex, sorry to hear about your experience.  I hope you are feeling better now. I too have suffered from LPR/Silent reflux for the past months and came to a desperate point of having a lump feeling on my throat, sore throat symptoms, stuffed nose with sticky post nasal drip, persistent sticky phlegm on the mid-low part of my throat, difficulty speaking, etc.  I went to 5 doctors to diagnose me some of which are ENT's and Gastroenterologist.  Finally, I had an endoscopy in my throat.  The ENT didn't see any lump, Thank God.  What he saw is swelling on the tip of my esophagus caused by acid reflux which I never feel (that's why it's called Silent Reflux - we don't really feel the acid coming up but the throat symptoms are there).  When I learned that it was purely acid reflux causing it and not anything serious, I felt happy and not stressed anymore and in 7 days the symptoms were gone.  I was taking omeprazole that time and I thought the acid reflux was gone for good. So I went out to have buffet and the next day all the symptoms were back.  My ENT extended Omeprazole 40mg for another month.  I realized with LPR you need to listen to your body and follow medical advice religiosly.  So I stopped eating anything with tomatoes, raw onions, too much garlic, anything citrus, chili, spicy, anything with caffein, coffee, tea, chocolate, too much dairy, fatty food, and oily food.  Choose grilled, steamed, boiled, roasted food over fried food.  Choose lean meat and always balance meat with veggies.  If possible eat more veggies than meat.  They said Apple Cider works for them but it doesn't work for me - it aggravates my throat issues.  What goes in your throat is important.  Fruits allowed are bananas and melon only.  In my husband's case bananas triggers acid reflux.  I used to eat oatmeal for breakfast and I stopped it just to see if my LPR would improve and it did.  No-no to all juices except for plain aloe vera, banana or melon juice.  I also gargle 1/4 teaspoon baking soda with a cup of warm water once everynight before I go to sleep or once every other night and it helped the LPR symptoms to improve.  I drink yakult or eat yogurt once a day after breakfat or after dinner, take 1 probiotic capsule at noon, and drink calcium with d3 before bed.  And, NEVER eat too much or drink too much water as this pushes the acid up our esophagus.  Once LPR symptoms are on the throat, it takes time to heal because that's just how our throat is -it's like a wound that needs time to heal but for a longer period of time.  Finally, I noticed that when I am happily busy LPR goes away.  Stress causes our stomach to produce acid so decide NOT to be stressed.  When I take notice of my symptoms, seems my esophahus and throat really acts up since my mind is on it the nerves becomes overly sensitive. When my sister visited I was happy and I hardly notice it and it was the time when it started healing.  Above all, prayer and the belief that God is able to heal me works 2 thumbs up.

So I have been trying to be really conscious of whats going on in my throat at the moment, rather than just getting lost in the pain of the globus sensation.

I wake up and feel like the root of my tongue is pressed against the roof of my mouth, and its tense, closing up my airway, and I have a dry mouth. I can just about consciously relax it enough to bring it off the roof of my mouth. It makes a small suction releasing sound. But within seconds it seems to default back to that state.

It bring me back to my question that wasnt answered before...

I can aggravate my symptoms by talking too much, or singing, which results in hoarseness, a raw and sore throat and globus sensation. Then it normally stops me sleeping because I cant relax with all that going on, and the viscious cycle begins again.

So when Ive aggravated my throat from singing etc, are the muscles tight and contracted, or is there inflammation, or is it just all in my mind!! Its driving me crazy

Wishing you all well, and some relief

Hi. I also get hoarse and dry after talking too much or singing. It does sound like muscles doesn't it? I am also under a lot of stress Which is beyond my control. (A sick mother) as I've got older I have been better at dealing with stress, mainly at work, but this is something else. It started at the same time. Ppi s haven't helped at all. Diet does but lately it's creeping back.,I'm still under the gastro specialist but thinking of an alternative route, but which one? Willing to try the chewing gum but feel that will be just temporary like gaviscon advance?

      any ideas out here ?

I have LPR and hoarseness and I had pain in my throat for ages.  Feels like a hand is around my throat, also pain in my chest.  I had a go at taking mastic gum before bed and have found a huge difference.  The chewing gum is temporary but works while you chew it so I have it every day now.

Ii also keep drinking warm water all day long (not a full glass at a time though) sipping it really help weaken the acid.

Hope this helps someone - it has me.

Yes, I get this also, lump feeling, burning throat and reflux.  It can go away for ages then come back - usually if I eat something I should not.  It sounds like the meals were too big.  Back to small mild foods again.  What a pain this is.

    HI!

I have exerything you said + a 100.2 fever most of the time!  Everything I have tried doesn't work either.  The ENT did the same thing for me, yet put me on Augmentin 875 and Pantoprazol 40mg that is apparently a very strong PPI.  I took that I can't remember 1 time or 2 times, and I swear I thought I was going to die at night time when I was in bed.  I had no problems at night time sleeping at all.  NONE!  Up until I took the PPI or the Augmentin.  I walked into the ENT and told them that and he said to stop the PPI and to keep taking the Augmentin.  Well, if there was nothing wrong then why the pills?  Why the fever, (which I still have) And now a sore throat.  And body pains too.  And an earache by night time?  Although I have also tried things for the post nasal drip which I believe is not helping.  I have tried, antihistimines, all kinds of acid reflux pills, sinus congestion pills, the med that is supposed to make mucas thinner to spit up.  Because I couldn't spit anything up and had trouble swallowing it all as well.  I also have a nose spray that I had to use before for awhile and am trying that, but that takes about a week or so of constant use 1 time a day for it to start working.  There was one thing I was reading a persons comment on this globus sensation about honey at night time.  So at night before bed, I take 100% natural bee honey, 1 tbs and that calms the feeling down, but anything else doesn't help.  The feeling is always there and won't go away.  I also noticed that when I eat the feeling comes back worse.  I ate a whole chopped up apple last night because I didn't want something fattening and I got to the last stupid piece with not much trouble at all and bang, something stuck there again.  Water, especially ice water makes the feeling of somthing stuck back there worse.  I am so lost and don't know what to do.  Plus, I moved to a new state and left the best doctors for really crappy ones that don't care.  I am also very depressed and an anxious person as it is and this isn't helping at all.  I dont want to exercise anymore or for that matter do anything.  I'm sorry for the blabbering, but at least you know someone out here is having the same problems.  Jacqui

I had the exact same stuff happen to me... especially thr ppi making it worse. The only thing that had worked for me is xanax so i think its all down to anxiety. And I've notice all the ppis and lesser strength medications never work for most people on these sites.

Try get prescribed xanax because it will make u relax and stop thinking about it which is the worst part for me.

      Hi Noel!

Actually I have xanax, I am prescribed .5mg 2x a day, but I dont take it in the day, cause it makes me think that if I have to go somewhere I will not be able to go.  Even though .5mg is nothing to me.  Actually for about 6 years now maybe I have been on 2mg a night every night.  I also have other anxiety meds as well.  I have had an extreme findings lately.  First, and the cause of a ton of things to me, is I have mold, all kinds of mold in my complete a/c unit, all 6 vents, the blower, the duct work and anything to do with a/c and heat.  So, I have been using our a/c since April and about the beginning of July is when I started to feel yucky and all this crap with my throat.  I got pneomia in August and was hospitalized for 3 days because it was so bad.  When I got out and prior to that, a few weeks or so, I kept noticing there were like pieces of dust on our bathroom floor and counter sometimes.  So I just swept them up.  Then one day in September 1st or 2nd week I think, a big dime size was on the counter. It was mold, I knew it was, long story, but I knew.  Anyway, I told the complex and they sent the maitenence manager out, he said no its not mold, I know cause I just took a course and its not.  He sprayed some stuff up there and left.  Well, IM no dummy and I got a few pieces of the insulation and had it lab tested and it was.  Needless to say when I told the complex and showed them the reports, they wanted me to sign a health release.  (I did NOT) I got a lawyer (who sucks), but anyway, they were forcing me to sign the paper, we now live in a hotel up a few miles from there and our stuff is still there.  Also, the day before we moved out, guess what?  Pneomia again, however this time I caught it in time to not go to the hospital.  Never knew I had it the first time.  Thought it was from the anesthia from the EGD that I had that same morning.  I am waiting on insurance adjuster to tell me if it is covered or not.  Hopefully tomorrow I will get a good answer from him.  I am stressed now big time over this wait.  Anyway, I have to have botox put into my splinkter to relieve pressure, because that is not relaxing at all.  I had 2 barrium swallows, 3 catscans now, an xray, an ultrasound, 2 scopes up my nose and down my throat, so much blood and then 2 other tests.  The GI Dr gave me I think its pepsid 40mg, not over the counter strength, and said that when they did the egd I have gastritius and a delay in swallowing somewhere I can't remember.  eg or ej junction?  I also had two other tests, 1 where they make you eat food while they xray you, kind of like the barrium swallows without a tablet, but with food.  And the Other I did not like at all, they squirt some gel up your nose and its supposed to go down your throat to make it go numb, it didn't and they stuck the camera up my nose and down my throat and its a pressure thing too?  Begins with a M, anyway, I threw up, so they took it out and did it again.  That time I suffered through it.  Whew.  But, anyway, yes xanax works, but at night its usually 1mg when I know I am not going anywhere and then a few hours later 2mg with my other meds.  Yeah, you know stress is really bad for it as well.  And then you get to thinking but I think alot of times I know its there and just so used to it.  Also, I am allegic to molds and some other crap.  I had an allergy test that was #1, but I need to have another one to follow up and I can't do it right now.  sad  I can't believe someone else here found the PPI made it worse.  That makes me feel more normal in a way..   Well, thats a long enough story for you now lol.  Ill be around.
