HI, just joined, and already apprehensive but some posts are making me more worried. I am 52, and in pain most of the day most days, but lots of folks seem in as much pain after even if its a different pain than before. i keep being told that i will feel so much better but the folks on here dont seem to be finding that? SCARED!!!

HI Jo
Please try to stop worrying. I am 51 - and had my first hip replaced 2 years ago. heading for my second one in january.
i was so nervous before i had got it done and had been in chronic pain so anything was a relief.
i flew through recovery and thats why i' m getting second one done, cant take pain anymore.
number one rule, when you get op done make sure you let docs know when you need pain relief. it hurts as its a major op, but its a different kind of pain.
do what they tell you to do and do your exercises.
i was up and walking 2 hours after op with the walker. and got home on day 3. swollen leg for few weeks but kept doing exercise and kept walking a little further every day.
trust me it does get easier and you will wonder why you didnt get it done sooner.
where are you living.
im from ireland.
best of luck and ask anything on this forum. it kept me sane during recovery.

hi
i got my hip done last year when i was 34 ...it has changed my life ...i was in pain everyday and cried most days after working and being on my feet all day and running around after my 4kids...yes you could have complications but i would think more success stories if more people shared...people always tell the negative ones lol ...you know yourself how much pain you are in and the struggle ...if its that bad ..go for it stay positive ..you are still young make these years pain free ..good luck

Hi I'm 18 days post op and 57 and was in such terrible pain 24/7 for up to 18 months before my op on right hip .I also had a terrible limp and really started to struggle .When I got my surgery date i was petrified not only of the surgery with spinal block , but also any possible outcomes with reading other experiences ,the first week was tough due to surgery pain only and swelling and sleeping on my back ,but from waking up no arthritic pain,it's the best thing i did and up to today are doing 7000 steps a day ,I'm tired when i overdo things but then i have a nap ,no pressure and no work for three months so theres jo rush im sure youlle be fine and wont regret it x

Thanks folks, I am just very nervous but suspect everyone is. The pain is grim & really affecting my mood. Some days are a bit better but then the next day its worse! Hate this and just fearful it will be as bad after!! fingers crossed tho!!

Hello Jo,
Had my thr in April and was out of pain immediately. and have not had any since They kept giving me painkillers in the hospital even though I said I had no pain. I refused them upon leaving on the second day, the nurse looked astonished.
You do not say whether you have a date for your op but, exercise will stop you having pain especially after the op. The fitter you are the less pain pre or post op, if you are not exercising I would suggest at least an exercise bike to build muscle.
We do not all have pain after thr, good luck when you have your op.

I found the first the weeks were the worst after that recovery seemed to be quick now I'm in week nine and walking a lot still going to physio to strengthen muscles but pain gone I am also a lot older than you. don't overdo it go at your own pace and you will soon be walking with no problem.
