Lumbar discetomy last week

**Hi
I had a lumbar discetomy last week since i woke up from the operation o have had terrible numbness in my foot and lower leg . It's worse then before all this started .
Its really hard to work on and there is no way i could drive . Has anybody else had this operation ?
Then yesterday i stepped on my foot and i had the most pain i have ever felt it was like an electric shock in my foot and i dropped to the floor in pain , and my calf went into spasm . Everytime i got up and put weight on it , it happened again . It took an hour before i could get up. I so worried i have made a terrible mistake having this operation . Any comments really would help
Thanks Rachael

I have heard so many complaints about this specific surgery. I'm assuming you had it on your lower back and not your neck. A week is too early to determine if this is permanent or not so you definitely are going to want to give it a couple of months . But be sure you report this to your surgeon.

Hi
Yes my back the pain in terrible in my leg worse than before i know early doors in my recovery but i know two people who had this done and they both had instant relief after surgery .
I can hardly walk i called the hospital and the doctor said he was not concerned and to just wait , i have not received a follow up appointment yet , but when i do i will be expressing my concerns.

HI
Thanks for the email i went to get my staples out today , as that is what my letter said and also said i had 7 staples in . Nurse took my dressing off and no staples , just some small peel off strips . I did not feel them in my back so was not surprised . Just confussed as letter said i had 7 in. I am going to watch to see the doctor . I am taking tramadol , oramorph and pregablin . But my leg and calf is just throbbing and cant stand for 30 seconds as it hurts so much. Hope mine is not a failed surgery ,

HI RACHAEL 300
I DID NOT HAVE SUCH AN OPERATION BUT WORKING IN THIS FIELD. YOUR PROBLEM SOUNDS LIKE A NERVE OR SOME NERVES ARE IRRITATED OR EVEN DAMAGED (NUMBNESS AND SPASM). DID YOU CALL YOUR SURGEON? EVEN WHEN THE PAIN GOES AWAY AND THE NUMBNESS STAYS, WOULD NOT BE A GOOD SIGN. TAKE CARE.

back surgery in general has such a bad success rate that they have a specific name for surgeries that don't work and cause more pain than they had before surgery. It's called failed back surgery syndrome. I am in the US so that's what I have always heard it referred to as. I'm really happy to hear that you know two people who had great relief from the surgery. and I don't think All Is Lost in your case either. definitely give it more time. it may come around but it takes a long time for a body to heal. you might ask your doctor to prescribe Gabapentin or pregabalin. Neurontin and Lyrica are the name brands for these drugs. They work specifically for nerve pain so it may very well help you at least until your nerves settle down.
