Lump in neck below earlobe

Hello, brand new here 😃

2 weeks ago I noticed a hard lump in my neck right underneath my right earlobe. It's about the size of maybe an olive or a marble. I've read a few posts here about stones in the parotid gland. But they've all mentioned pain, & this thing isn't at all painful - for which I'm very grateful!

Have any of you had a swollen parotid gland with no pain? I don't have any other symptoms like fever or loss of appetite. Just wondering if I should wait & see if it goes away on its own.

Any input is appreciated. Thank you!

you need to go and get it checked out with your doctor.

Thanks for your reply Townko! But right now doctor offices are pretty overwhelmed with COVID-19. Guess I'll give it a few weeks & see if it clears up on its own. Hopefully by then the pandemic will be over.

      Thanks!

Just want to give an update in case someone else finds a hard lump under their ear & like me starts frantically searching the internet 😃.

I went to an ear, nose, throat specialist yesterday. He thinks the lump is a part of the spine that goes from the back of the neck to the side of the neck. I forget what he called it, transverse process something or other. Why it sticks out on the right side & not the left I didn't ask. But our bodies aren't always exactly symmetrical.

He did say the other, less likely, possibility was a parotid gland "mass" & he referred me for a CT scan. But I decided I'm not going to waste my time & money & get exposed to unnecessary radiation just to find out there's nothing wrong with me.

So I just wanted to let people know if you find a hard knob under your earlobe, don't panic! There's a possibility it could just be a normal part of your anatomy 😃

    Hi Barb,

I found a mass in the same spot you describe last summer and went first for an ultrasound, then a CT scan, and finally a biopsy. It couldn't be definitively diagnosed and was "diagnosed" at biopsy as chronic inflammation. I spoke to my ENT about it and ultimately decided to have it removed as it was giving me terrible anxiety since no one could really tell me what it was. I had it removed 4 weeks ago and it turned out to be a bacterial abscess so it's a darn good thing I had it removed. It wasn't a pleasant experience and I had complications post-surgery with fluid collection but for me, the anxiety is now gone wondering what the heck it was for over 6 months.

Before it was removed, I too had no pain at all. I had no fever or loss of appetite or anything like that.

I hope you get some answers and it turns out to be nothing to worry about! Good luck 😃

I also found a tiny lump just under my ear lobe which was diagnosed as a tumour in the parotid salivary gland and recently, after it had grown much larger had it removed.
