Lump was on side of neck was there when child now gone as adult?

Just want to know if this happened to anyone. At 12 I saw a lump on the side of my neck when I flexed it to the left, even my father saw it. I am now 43 but have always wondered what that lump was. (also wondered why my Father didn't take me to the hospital) If it was cancer I surely wouldn't be alive now but what could it have been? Throughout the years I looked at it and it and it seemed to have disappeared but it seems like i can feel that something was there. Should I get a scan of my neck to see what it was or if it's completely goneeek
