Hi James.
do you normally have anxiety? If so, shortness of breath lying down or sitting up is very common. I always advise people to let the doctor know whenever they have a new symptom so that you can have peace of mind.
do you have any other symptoms?
try this:
go to YouTube and search for mindfulness breathing Guided meditation 10 minutes. Use ear buds if you have them. This is very short but very effective in controlling symptoms of anxiety. It keeps you in the present moment.
there is another one called mindfulness meditation guided 10 minutes. This is excellent for general relaxation.
there are so many meditations for anxiety on YouTube to choose from. When I do these regularly, my entire mind and body calm down in my breathing is way more relaxed.
What happens when we are anxious is the brain sends out adrenaline which can cause shortness of breath. Or you can take control of this but I keep trying to keep your mind calm. When you get shortness of breath try not to get anxious because that will make it worse. You have to take the attitude of "I'm OK with this. This will pass." But always go to the breathing that you learned on the audio.
if you have things in your life that are causing anxiety, I recommend you speak with a counselor who specializes in this and who can help you manage the anxiety better. Do things that relax you and try not to take life too seriously. Your health is too important.
pick the audios on YouTube that seem to relax you the most and listen to them frequently when you're lying down to sleep.
you're going to be fine! 😁??

In Victorian period when people went to bed they would sleep in the seated position. with pillows in the small of their back and support for the spine.
I have Arthritis in neck and spine, I sleep with my neck and head at about thirty degrees to the mattress with a firm memory foam pillow, that works for me
