Lysine -- are any forms or brands better?

Posted , 5 users are following.

So, with all the research -- Lysine seems to be an agreed upon effective supplement to deter or minimize OBs, due to it's ability to offset arginine, which the virus needs.

So, online I see lysine supplements (500mg is typical), tablets, ointment, cream, liquid.    Has anyone seen any credible science regarding dosage, form, etc?   Every brand claims to have the best, of course.

I'm glad it's not the most expensive supplement in the vitamin store (!!) but I would like any insights into finding the most potent, pure, reliable, etc.  I expect to be taking it for the rest of my life.

Thanks!!

Some people swear lysine helps, and it certainly doesn't hurt to try it out, but note that the HSV scientific/research community doesn't endorse anything other than a balanced diet (studies in people, versus test tubes, were not adequately convincing), plus lysine has no impact on reducing shedding and transmission. Those that take it, though, recommend 1000 mg daily, I believe.

It keeps coming back to giving up (or having much less) caffeine, alcohol and chocolate!!!!    So, to follow a good diet for HSV, if it tastes good, spit it out?? ; )

I did read that Lysine can help bone density (I have osteopenia, too...).  Oddly enough, that didn't show up at first a few years ago when I was researching bone density and calcium absortion.

Personally, I don't believe in changing one's diet, unless it is unhealthy and not balanced to begin with. There's no clinical evidence to support the high lysine/low arginine diet (plus both are found in everything!), which is why reputable sites don't blindly pitch that, and triggers vary a lot from person to person, so I still drink loads of caffeinated tea daily, have had some chocolate as well as alcohol.

P.S. If you're considering it, the lysine dosage that's often suggested is 1000 mg three times daily, although I suspect that's for Type 2. Also, in case that dosage is above what's recommended by the manufacturer, be careful, as apparently too much lysine can interfere with mineral/vitamin absorption.

      Good one.... Funny. Made smile.

I have a pretty great diet. Chicken fish veggies. Hardly any junk foods fast foods or fried foods. But umm chocolate ice cream man.... 😌 So no chocolate?

And what is lysine good for? And this arginine stuff? I have more research to do. Glad I love to learn.

You don't have to change anything in your diet. None of that herpes diet stuff has been proven, plus you are already asymptomatic, so you can eat as much chocolate as you like! Lol

I just bought lysine 1000mg to take one a day. Which I just started ... I read that during an outbreak or when you think you're getting one, if you take it two or three times a day, it can help with that. I'm hoping taking 1 a day will help with any frequency of getting OBs

The sites I saw said three times daily, but didn't specify whether this was in general or only during outbreaks. 3x does seem a lot to take every day generally, though!
