Made to feel fat .....

I have posted a few times on these boards about my throidism and have felt genuinely relieved to know that I am not the only one with problems, despite my docs making me feel as though I am.

I am at a point just now where I have now been told that my thyroid has evened out and that I am to stay on 125mcg of thyroxine, ok says me, but I still feel cra p. Docs then drag me back in for another blood and tell me I am now borderline diabetic, will find out for def after GTT (whenever they decide to do that) my ESR is also high, but not to worry about that (say the powers at be) docs then say, since your thyroid has evened out you have to lose weight, your too big **crash goes my emotions** I gained 4 stone with the thyroidism and was up until 18 months ago (what I thought) a healthy 12-14, now at a 16-18 (18 most days) I have been told that I am too big and have been told I am now getting put on orlistat to aid my weight loss, now it may just be me but I feel gutted .... i'm not THAT big, I am 5'8 and still see people bigger walking the streets, I am active (some day more than most) I force myself up out of bed everymorning, get the kids packed off to childminders and head for work, most mornings by car as kids have decided to go slow, but many mornings, like this one, I walk, its 1.5 miles to work so thats a 3 mile round trip ...... I sadly injured my back about 2 months ago and the pain from thats still there so don't wanna over do it, now I have a doc telling me to exercise every day (not possible with my kids and work ... no babysitter) take these tablets which will affect my bowel movements  and eat like a rabbit, the diet sheet they gave me is scary, a female should be on 2000 calories daily, 1500 if you wanna lose weight, I have been advised 800 - 1000 caloried per day ..... surely this is a bit extreme.

I was weighed at 106kg (dunno what that is ... and not caring either lol) and have been told to lose 25kg, I have been given timescales as to what they expect ..... these are 10kg in 6 months MINIMAL.

Now is this just me, or are they making me out to be worse than I am ???

I can personally view this form both aspects,

Firstly viewing your concern about the Dr's and there radical view of your weight. You can basically look at it that in 2002 there was a report written by Derek Wanless and his views were that in 20 years time the UK as a whole would accept PERSONAL responsibility for health and the implications thay come with poor health. Thererfore meaning that the NHS would have to push for the public to become healthier in order meet certain criteria...including the 5 a day drive, change in school meals ETC.

I'm not in any way trying to rectofy the upset your Dr may have caused you but there is targets to be met around diabetes, weight loss, chronic disease and so on in order to 'choosing health: making healthier choices easier' 2004 the 6 prioritries identified from this report also written by Derek Wanless were smoking, sexual health, mental health, drinking and OBESITY.

I know this all sounds very in depth but this is probably where all this is coming from, from your doctors piont of view.

The second side of my point of view is that i too am about 5ft8\" and weighed 15stone 6lbs which also made me a size 16/18 the only other side of this is that i wanted to loose weight i went through all the hormone tests and diabetic checks and they all came back negative which gave me no reason for me not to be able to shift my weight. i have now been on Orlistat for 4 months and lost 1st 3lbs it is 'do-able'.

I believe that you need to look at it from the point of view that there is people out there who are wanting to help you and have handed you Orlistat on a plate. I fought for 2 months for the chance to be on Orlistat.

So my message to you is to keep your chin up and enable yourself to become a thinner happier healthier person.

I know exactly where you are coming from. About 6 years ago i got inspired and over a 14 mth period lost over 9 stone taking me down to a size 12 (which for someone of 6ft 3ins is quite slim) and 12st 7lbs. My hip bones stuck out and I had no spare flesh.

Went to the nurse for a tetanus jab and she glibly turned round and said \"well, you may think you have done well but you are still technically obese\".

That destroyed me. Lost the plot, put it all back on and a bit more. So now i am back at stage 1 starting all over again.

    So keep at it eh?

I also recommend you checkout the Orlistat/Xenical forum as it is very active and supportive.
