Hi,interesting question. I've experimented with magnesium a few times now over the years. I've been taking Magnesium L Threonate now since December with Fluvoxamine, another SSRI. Magnesium L Threonate was developed in the laboratory specifically to cross the blood brain barrier and get where it is needed,in the brain where it's reported can help with mental illness. Check out Dr. Tracy Mark's video on magnesium on YouTube for a detailed explanation.
Lots of forms of magnesium, including magnesium Oxide can cause diarrhoea, but because L Threonate enters the brain I can confirm it doesn't cause any diarrhoea. Magnesium L Threonate was found in some research to enhance the effects of antidepressants in the people who were taking them, meaning they recovered more quickly.
As far as my experience goes,I had been taking Fluvoxamine since March when I started taking it in December. Circumstances were causing increased stress and anxiety. The recommended dosage is three capsules a day,but as with any supplement which has the potential to be just as powerful as prescription drugs, you titrate up slowly and observe the effects before any increase. I increased to one capsule over a week and have just recently slowly increased to two capsules. In my experience I can confirm 100% that it does enhance the effects of the antidepressants because I've experienced all the side effects I originally had with Fluvoxamine, dry mouth, gastric problems, sweating, heightened anxiety etc but has definitely made a difference in calming intrusive thoughts, feeling less stressed etc. I am waiting for the side effects to subside, and the heightened anxiety symptoms to die down to see the real benefit of taking it. Magnesium L Threonate is also expensive compared to other forms. Over the coming weeks I expect to see if it is worth it. Hope that helps.
