Hi ladies..
I have been using magnesium and calcium for a while now, they work well together.. However i switched to calcium and Vit D ( Natecal ) chewable ..
no longer having the magnesium ...
then i started effervescant magnesium ... i always take this by dropping in a glass of water, they range from lemon - orange flavour etc..
what I want to share is, as I have been an insomniac all through peri etc, I have found that the effervescant form of magnesium, that you fizz and drink has totally relaxed me before sleep, i find myself in a lovely relaxed mood, and ready for slumber ...
Since this little difference, i have been researching magnesium and it also helps, tightened muscles, headaches, aches and pains..
worth a try ugh ? Drink it 30 mins before you go to bed ...
Magnesium has many benefits to good health, one of them being its action as an effective natural sleep aid. James F. Balch, M.D., author of Prescription for Nutritional Healing, writes: “A lack of the nutrients magnesium and calcium will cause you to wake up after a few hours and not be able to return to sleep.”
Chronic insomnia that occurs with frequent night time awakenings is one of the main symptoms of magnesium deficiency.
On the other hand, a high magnesium diet has been found to be associated with deeper, less interrupted sleep. This was proven in a study done by James Penland at the Human Nutrition Research Center in North Dakota.
Mildred Seelig, M.D., the leading medical researcher on magnesium says: “Many people needlessly suffer pain – including fibromyalgia, migraines and muscle cramps – because they don’t get enough magnesium.”
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center web site, inadequate magnesium also appears to reduce serotonin levels in the brain.
One study found that magnesium was just as effective as an antidepressant drug in treating depression. In addition, researchers at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute reported that for every 100 milligram increase in magnesium intake, the risk of developing type-2 diabetes decreased by 15 per cent. Other studies have shown that people with migraine headaches have low concentrations of magnesium in their body.
i intend to post more magnesium finding as i find them
this I totally second this info above as I really noticed a difference after taking effervescant magnesium before bed , and my curiosity lead me to find out more ..

Apologies - I posted a new discussion about the benefits of Magnesium today after reading ANOTHER post singing its praises for someone who was having trouble sleeping (maybe it was a post you'd actually put on here??).
Well having read up a bit on its benefits today, I whizzed out this morning and bought a supply. I've already started taking it so hopefully this time next week, I'll notice a difference in my sleep pattern - and anything else itmight help me with.
Funny you mention about its benefits regarding depression in particular. There's many women on this forum who sound at desperately low ebb and unable to cope without the use of antidepressants. I'll try ANYTHING before I give into using them. I undersand that some levels of depression/anxiety need very specific meds (my eldest sister for example), but maybe they're low in essential mins/vits??
What I find amazing is that it would appear that most GPs in the UK seem really ill-informed about the treatment of peri symptoms generally. Maybe they should use Google to find out as much about it as most of us women on this forum seem to be doing!
Think the new approach to treating peri now is to make the first course of treatment as SSRIs/ADs. Low magnesium/low serotonin = bad news!!
I'm quite happy to give these minerals a go. I'm taking Menopace Original and believe I can supplement the Magnesium in them with an additional dose to get my RDA.
Wouldn't it be nice if I could ward off the worse of the peri symptoms by simply taking specific Vit/Min supplements, a dab of Progesterone Cream?
I've been feeling so much better (mentally and joint aches) since I started using Menopace and Prog. Cream at the beginning of the year. I really have a potentially stressful time coming up this summer, so it'd be really good if I can get myself calm in advance of the 'storm'!
Please continue posting your findings jayneejay: they're really, really helpful, Thanks!
Sx

since this was posted months ago, i changed my magnesium to Solgar Chelated as doesnt upset tummy.
the effervescant one i used was making me run to the loo every morning, as it was magnesium citrate and has laxative effects ..
magnesium oxide has laxative effects aswell..
so now all good with the Chelated..

Having suffered with insomnia and anxiety for many years, my daughter put me on the Magnesium trail, and have been doing lots of research over last fortnight.
Bought some Magnesium citrate, which did give me a long needed relatively undisturbed 3 nights sleep, felt better, but does go through me!
That's not too much of an issue but don't think it's healthy longterm, so now need to find an alternative...quickly!
Bought the oil, but don't find that helps at all. Now looking at the Chelated Magnesium, but read they contain Oxide, which we're not supposed to have?
In the UK, it's not easy to buy many variations.
Have been directed to:
Natural Ionic Magnesium with Trace Minerals found on Amazon...any views gratefully accepted as can't waste any more cash!
Thanks

I saw this interesting article that backs up your thoughts on antidepressants:
"Many baby boomers are on hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which can deplete vitamins B6 and B12, folic acid and magnesium. These nutrients are critical for heart health, as well as for mood. Rather than an antidepressant prescription, these women should be given the appropriate supplements to restore balance. I have seen many women do well once these nutrient depletions were addressed. This applies to younger women on oral contraceptives as well." very interesting, don't you think? Worth a shot b4 drugs.......

If you look back I posted on this subject and MANY on insomnia over past year!
This is my main problem, plus the tired foggy head feeling, as yet!
I've tried so many supplements and aids to help me get a few hours unbroken sleep...and to wake up without this heavy stuffy tired head feeling!
Occasionally, I don't have this heavy eyes feeling in morning and can't fathom why!
As for Magnesiums...I take 400g of Chelated Magnesium daily. Two with breakfast, two after dinner...doesn't seem to help with my sleep but does keep me regular...so continue.
Can't take citrate as upsets tummy, oxide is cheaper grade so have been buying this Chelated online for few months now...hoped it would help insomnia but don't think it does!
Does any other Lady recommend any other brand or type of mg instead, for Sleep? Please?
Have recently been taking 5htp and not even sure if that makes any difference to me...managing 4-5 hours unbroken sleep these days but still waking with this horrid foggy heavy eyed feeling...don't know how to ease it...it seems to lift by evening!
Try to enjoy my life though but days are easier and clearer without this tired feeling...any ideas please Ladies?
