Managing Hip Scar

Hi all

I am just over three weeks into my THR recovery and think I am doing OK - round the house now with no crutches and one crutch for my daily walk outside. However my scar has suddenly started playing up. It is a large scar - at least 12 inches long and it has started to become very uncomfortable - I guess it does not help that you have no choice but to keep sitting on it! Is this new tightness just because it is healing - it is pretty lumpy and bumpy. It does look clean and dry.

What has other peoples experience been with their scar and how long does it take to stop being painful. Does anyone have any advice as to what might help. Has anyone tried silicon sheets or any particular creams/oils?

After three hip joint replacements the healing process along the incision takes a few months to heal. I had the side approach called posterior long narrow 10" incision, which gives the surgeon a good area to see what they are doing and install the components correctly. Scars over time will shrink . when removing the tape from incision there was a long red line very neat incision. Really I was never concerned about scars more interested in getting my life back and on to a better quality of life.

I never used any cream or lotions they are fine small lines . Some hippies use creams that claim to reduce the scars , it's a personal decision.

Thanks for the reply Barbara. Not interested in the look of the scar, more in reducing this increasing discomfort - perhaps it is just the healing process and I need to be patient.

    hello there,

I'm now 3 months post hip replacement surgery on my left side, and feel it takes up to now to actually feel almost normal again! My scar is about 12" long and almost gone now. I can now sleep on my left side quite comfortably for a couple of hours before changing position. It still feels bit lumpy in parts, but i keep massaging it with Aloe cream every few days which helps a lot. There's a lot of muscle, tendons etc underneath your scar plus stitches ( dissolvable?) to iron out and settle down. This all takes time and patience! Every week that passes, you'll be surprised how much better you feel. 3 weeks in is too early for improvement. The first 6 weeks are the hardest I found - then you'll start to begin to feel better, trust me! Good luck.
