Managing vertigo on a daily basis

Hello; It's December 30th, 2017. My name is Blaze. I woke up 13 days ago with my eyes spinning like a slot machine. I don't drink alcohol, smoke or do drugs. I couldn't get out of bed. I own my own home n my daughter n 2 year old granddaughter live below me on floor 2. I was on floor 4. Eventually I basically crawled to my walkin closet n knocked on the heat vents to get my daughters attention. I thought I was having a stroke. Im a 53 yr old female. After she called 911, they took me to the hospital n said the nastagema is very bad in both eyes. N said I have vertigo. They said it is the crystals in the inner ear that are misagligned. They also gave me Betahistine 16mg n take 3 times a day. After 7 days I felt much better. But have had some down sites since the meds ended in 1 week. My Q is WHY do the Drs not want to give you these meds when they in fact help you ? Ive heard, Meclyzine by Bonine helps. This can only be bought in the USA. but Im close to the border. Please tell me how you all cope daily n what meds you use ? Before any of the vertigo starts, my face n head gets extremely HOT. I get the ice out fast !!! Do any of you get the same experiences? Thank You, Blaze

If it is crystal in the ear there are exercises that help. But if it’s truly Menieres you need to be properly diagnosed.  Get in to see your doctor or you tube exercises for the crystal to save money if it helps.  But get the right diagnosis.

    Hey Blaze,

If you have Menieres Betahistine is recommended for constant use and takes a few weeks to start working. I’m not too sure if Betahistine works on anything other than Menieres as it was literally created for it, but there must be some reason why they prescribed it. If it’s crystals, don’t worry they’ll dispel with help and you’ll be fine.

I get really hot and shaky when I get dizzy. I’m on Betahistine 3x16mg

    Best,

    Christina

Hi Blaze, yes feeling very warm is one of the signs of the vertigo starting. I am in the UK and Betahistine seems pretty standard here for daily use. I am on 16 mg x 3 daily and it takes a month to kick in.

Hi, I'm in the US and specialists here usually prescribe diuretics and meclizine for Meniere's.  Meclizine helps with the nausea you get with vertigo and the diuretics help with the fluid buildup that causes the vertigo.  Meclizine did not help me, but does help my mother.  Betahistine is the normal treatment in the U.K. and seems to help once people get the right dose.  The diuretic worked for me, and low dose diazapam helps when the attacks come on (only occasionally now).  And yes, getting hot seems to go with vertigo, plus sweating.  If it is crystals causing the vertigo, you can go online and see the movements that can move the crystals back to where they belong.  Just google 'crystals in ear'.  But you should see an ear specialist if it doesn't get better.  Good luck.  We know what it is like to have bad vertigo!

    Hi Blaze:

Sorry to hear about your challenges. I have Meniere's and did various things over the last 5 years from diuretics, eliminating caffeine and meditation. None seemed to work. Recently I asked my Dr. in the US if she would prescribe Betahistine. She did with a 28mg tablet that I take once a day. I've been taking it now for about 3 weeks and I have not had one episode. It seems to have worked for me. I am a 59 year old male who works out 5X a week and tries to eat well. I was surprised that my doctor never prescribed betahistine until I asked her. I am not sure what the deal is with the drug in the US, but i could only get it at a small local RX and my insurance did not cover it. It cost me $114 for 90 pills, while expensive, so far it has been life-saving for me. I would encourage you to begin and stick to a strong fitness routine, get yourself in shape if you are not and establish a healthy nutritional diet.  i believe this healthy lifestyle along with the Betahistine is my cure. Hope this is helpful and wish you the best of luck. Greg
