Manipulation Under Anaesthetic

Hi fellow knee sufferers! I'm 12 weeks post TKR and saw my surgeon today. He has suggested (recommended) that I undergo MUA asap as my knee bend isn't what it ought to be. I understand this involves the manual procedure then being put on a machine overnight in hospital then intensive physio. My concern is that of course my surgeon cannot guarantee if it will improve things or to what extent it will if it does. He has also said it will cause pain but can't say how much and how long for. I've done well over the last 12 weeks in other ways. The wound has healed well, I can fully straighten the new knee, I have been driving for six weeks and I can walk for at least an hour with virtually no pain in my new knee. I just wondered if anyone has undergone this MUA procedure and if so, what was it like? I'm in two minds whether I should do it or persevere a little longer with more physio. Help!

I'm pleased you have had it done I have had manipulation done twice but unlike you I was not put on a machine afterwards and walked out unaided and it worked a treat.  That was my first knee replacement and have just gone through my second one sixteen weeks ago,   So I wish you well,

Omg Dode..i started to read this post this morning but i was scheduled for my own MUA this afternoon. ..have now had it and am home. Holy sore muscles and ligaments batman...i had a general anaesthetic but fast acting and came out of it quickly. They were able to get 135 degrees so i am super hopeful that this will be a huge improvement. ..i too am going back to the hospital for intensive physio starting tomorrow. Thanks for sharing...I've read your full post now but was too chicken to do it yhis morning. ... lol

Hi Donna. Well done to you! Good luck with the recovery. I wish I could achieve 135 degrees! I am sore this morning, the immediate aftermath of all the maniupulation i suspect. This is the frustrating thing in that you want/need to do the physio but the pain gets in the way. I am at the hospital this morning to see the physios and plan ahead from there. A bit down this morning as the knee is still stiff so I am still a bit sceptical as to what extent of improvement I can achieve. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Thanks Dode. I think the biggest improvment I am seeing is that the cement-like stiffness has gone ... the muscles and ligaments, as you say, are sore as hell - but I guess that's to be expected .... I also had some muslce cramps in the quad last night (the helpful stretches I foudn on the internet show someone holding their heel into their bum for  a complete knee bend .... LOL ... that's not happening... so guess I will try suggestion number 2 - which was massage). I am excited to go to physio this morning and try the bike ...previous to this I could not get a full revolution so ...fingers crossed ... I also found one of those pedal exercisers online that folks have said were helpful (and a better price than the gouging that Amazon wanted) .... so am thinking of buying myself one - I work from home so I could install it under my desk and pedal away as I code/talk .... (maybe even dream of pedalling away from the conference calls). Good luck with your own physio .... and be sure to post how you're doiing ... misery loves company (in terms of the physio paind and suffering) - that may not sound right but I like hearing how folks are making out.
