Manual manipulation under general anesthesia tomorrow!

Hi it's Amy. I go back in the hospital at 5:45 tomorrow morning to have my MUA.  Currently my measurements are 85/17 and they will crack me to 140/0.  I am spending the night because my pain has even very poorly controlled so r the first 24 hrs they want me on IV meds.  I am nervous about the pain after.  I got my CPM machine today.  Will send a note when it's over.  Wish me luck!

Oh my! That procedure sounds quite HARSH! Even under general anesthesia it sounds very scary!

I KNOW those of us with TKR have undergone very severe surgeries, so maybe it won't be any worse than that. I sure HOPE that you will be OK.

I will be praying for a great outcome for you and better results in the lessening of PAIN department!

    God bless you, Amy!

I too was very nervous but when it was over I realized that it

wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. In a previous post I

mentioned it felt as if I had done a serious workout for the legs and being extremely sore the next day but to me it wasn't as bad

as surgery. I had my mua on October 2. They also did a block

that lasted about 30 hrs which was great because it got me

through most of the weekend and ready for pt.

I don't know yet if it helped but I don't regret doing it, the mua is not what is painful it's the pt that will beat you up. I do agree with you pain control is ultimate.

    You'll be just fine.

I have been really fortunate to have PTs that are gentle yet effective. I told them upfront that I would be one of their hardest-working patients. That is just how I am. I ALSO told them that I have a high pain threshold so will push myself plenty hard, and that my entire being responds to GENTLE but shuts down to HARSH and ROUGH.

I have been able to do very well in PT, and they have seen that I AM one of their hardest-working patients. As a teacher of first and second graders for over 30 years I have needed to find out what works best with each child. We adults are the same. We first and foremost need UNDERSTANDING. If a child knows you really care and that you will be gentle with them, they will work harder than if treated roughly. Adults are the same.

I hear SO MANY cases where PTs seem to be torture-givers. I have never been able to understand how in their opinion that creates an atmosphere of trust and learning! It is abuse, and NOBODY of any age should have to endure THAT!

I hope you will be OK! It made me very sad to hear that your feelings about the PTs were that they would "BEAT you up!" If they did this to ME I would be OUT THE DOOR!

Please keep us posted on your recovery.

I will pray that your PTs and all other PTs gain insight into kindness and understanding which trumps harshness and roughness EVERY TIME.

I had my MUA 4 months ago and although Dr said it was successful I am at 124 ROM. I had to ask for pain killers when I woke up and wasn't given any when I was released 2 hours later...Luckily I had some strong pain killers at home and i dosed myself up! The next couple of days I was sore (like a hard PT session) but unfortately the stiffness didn't go away. Good luck - I have heard that the CPM machine really makes a huge difference in the recovery time!

Good luck Amy - think positive & you will get through it. The CPM machine is such a good way of keeping the leg moving.

As my revision date creeps nearer & nearer (2 weeks today) the fear is growing too! We'll cope - we're women!!

Good luck!!! I loved the CPM machine, after my TKR...they had me using it in the hospital and then sent me home with it. I think it made all the difference. Kept my knee from getting too stiff and also kept my knee moving.

There's a misunderstanding about my "pt beating you up"

comment it's the exercises not the therapist , my therapists are

really good people. When the anesthesia and the blocks wears

off the exercises to gain rom can be brutal.

hi everyone. It's Amy.  I spent about 30 hours in he hospital following MUA.  Came home, up 33 stars to my apt showered and back down again to PT.  MUA was definitely the right decision.  I wholeheartedly agree with Kikomay that it is the PT that will hurt not the MuA because u r asleep for that part.  I too love mt PT people and trust them and tey are only doing their job when they "torture me". I say that w a smile.  I had 2 PT sessions in the hospital and spent 6.5 hours on the CPM. All went well but I was on IV pain meds so that made things easier.  Going into procedure I measured 85/19.  He measured and photographed me at 115/5 and during the day I got to 95/9 on my own.  Today I was 103/9 at PT.  my goal is to get to 110/<5 by next week when i see doc again.  on cpm i could only bend to 80, 90  was too much.  trying to get over 100 by next week.  thanks for everyone's advice and support especially about pain meds.  better to hear from people who have been thru it and get it that u must keep up w meds especially before pt.  thanks!!

SO GLAD to hear that things went well for you for your procedure! I was very worried for you when you explained what was going to happen!

You deserve LOTS of REST and lots of ICE!

Take care, and please let us know how things go for you in the coming days.

Hi Amy i had an MUA on Aug 26th...it was certainly the best thing for me. My measurements were similar to your pre procedure. ..they are now 128 and -3...straightening will be the bane of my existence. ..since i think I've had that tiny bend for 20 years. I had 5degrees or more change per week sometimes between sessions which was very gratifying after almost 3 months being stuck at 85. The PTs have now told me to stop pushing for any more ROM as they consider 120 adequate for almost everything. .at 128 she said ypu can do everything even climb a ladder ( that won't be happening any time soon). Good luck with your recovery xx
