Many symptoms, possible cause?

Hi

Sorry that the title is not very informative but im losing all faith with anything I try!

I'll start from the beginning.

About a year and a half ago, I had a stress induced cold/chest infection (due to a new job change and my girlfriend splitting up with me). Had a hard time, got rid of the cold but the blocked nose never went away.

I visited my GP and they started me on some nasal drops (flixonase), they never worked, after going back they tried numerous sprays (beconase) which seemed to have an effect but only for a couple of days. (Ive been using beconase for months) but they are for allergies?

The GP then reffered me to a specialist becuase they assumed a polyp or something in the nose, the specialist stuck a camera up my nose, did CAT scans but they showed nothing, so I was sent back to my GP who has advised that I have to live with it! Not happy to say the least.

The main symptom of my nasal issue is that one, sometimes both nasal cavities are filled with a clear mucus, but its like a big, clear air bubble! Its very thick and unless I blow it from my nose it wont budge. Once cleared, it lasts about 45 minutes until I have to blow my nose again.

now please keep with me;

The second issue ive had is that I seem to have low blood sugar levels at certain times of the day, 10AM being the most prominent. Im not a big eater (eat to live not live to eat etc) but I make sure I had breakfast and always have lunch.

I start work at 7:30am, up at 6:30am and have normally wheat based breakfast, this gets me up to about 10:30 when I start to feel hot, sweaty, shakey and light-headed, close to fainting at some stages.

As soon as ive had something with Sugar in, it subsides, until lunchtime at least. But by the time I get home im asleep. I normally miss evening meals becuase im too tired or if i do get them, I eat, then sleep straight after, sometimes up to 15 hours worth of sleep until the next morning and it starts all over again!

Its very unsociable and I hate it.. BUT

Ive found if I miss breakfast, im hungry and my body tells me I am but I can go right up until Lunchtime, eat my lunch, carry on with my day and get home with more energy, where I would normally be asleep by 6pm!

Conculsion:

I think that I have some sort of infection in my nose, which my body is trying to repair all day hence using all of my energy and sugar levels.

But I am no doctor. Does anyone have any suggestions apart from going back to my GP and demanding they look into it further.

Just for information, im 26, male, dont do regular exercise but have a very active job (im a maintenance engineer)  and am a medium smoker, 10-20 a day.

Thanks

Jamie

    Hi Jamie

you sound if you are having a rough time

The most likely cause of your nose problem is allergy to pollen and or dust mites and or animals such as cats. Did you change accommodation at the time of your relationship breakdown, getting a new job?

Make sure you vacum your home especially your bedroom frequently and change and wash your bedlinen weekly.Vacuum your mattress and get a an anti allergy  protector for it. If you can buy new washable pillows and duvet, throw your old ones out. Also dust with disposable dusters. Anti histamine tablets may help.

Try to eat a healthy diet with regular meals rather than skipping them. Complex carbs such as oats, either as porridge or oatcakes, sweet potato will syop swings in blood sugar and even if you don't fancy these, bread, potatoes rice or pasta, are better than high sugar foods. Make sure you have a small portion of protein at each meal, such as an Egg at breakfast and lean meat, chicken or fish in a sandwich or cooked meal. Remember to have your 5 a day of fruit and vegetables.Fried foods and takeaways

    should be occassional treats,

Sorry if you have already tried these measures. Changes in life can be very stressful, which may make you suddenly more aware of physical symptoms.  It can be a vicious circle. I suffer from hayfever and dustmite allergy but can keep symptoms under control by these simple measures. If I stay away from home my nose symptoms often flare up.  Good luck

      Hi Susan

      Thanks for the reply.

Im booking an appointment to get a blood test soon, hopefully that can rule out allergies. I have lived at home all of my life, the dog is 7 this year so cant be him!

Ive tried various tablets, sprays and drops from chemists and through perscription as the GP assumed this could be the case, but it doesnt even touch it. Ive been given anti-histamine and even been given Amoxycillin to clear any infection. Ive never had a problem with pollen or dust before.

Its not like it goes away either, on holiday in Spain 2 weeks ago it was the same, the pain going through my ears on the plane was unbareable as these are also blocked ( I can pop them but it returns moments later)

I can stay away for weeks at a time and have no change!

House is cleaned daily and im a bit of a minimalist so dont tend to have too much dust lying around things at home but will definately try disposable dusters.

The problem with my meals is that if im having breakfast, it reduces my energy that much so, by the time I get home at 5pm I literally cannot move. Hence I miss my dinner.

My job isnt active all the time so some days I can do nothing at all at work and still get home in the exact same, no energy state,

If I miss breakfast, I can get home at 5pm with more energy.

I know this is odd as the effect should be the other way around, but im litterally spending my home time sleeping then im getting back up and going to work again (Im sleeping from 6pm to 6am!)

Im also going to print this lot out to show my GP as its been difficult trying to explain all of my symptoms.

      Thanks

    Hi Jamie

i do hope you find the cause of your symptoms. It certainly doesn't look like dustmite allergy, and if you were allergic to your dog, it would have improved when you went on holiday. I became allergic to a family cat. I didn't notice anything specific until I went away to uni, but suffered every vacation.  Food allergies are unlikely to only cause nasal type symptoms.

There is little more I can suggest, with the ENT surgeon not picking anything up.

    Jamie,

First of all, quick smoking. That is priority number one. Secondly, go to the local drugstore and get a package of sinus flush. Flush warm solution with packet up each side and out your nose every day. Third, nasal sprays are a temporary fix to symtoms and do more harm than good.

my guess is you have allergies and see an allergist to be tested.

      Hi Mike

      Thanks for the reply.

I know..smoking is the main culprit here. I've tried in the past and failed and if I'm honest I'm not wanting to quit, I'm just not in the mindset. Since I don't want to quit there is no point trying.

I've tried the nasal rinse by neilmed, twice daily as suggested and it works for about 48 hours, keeps it generally clear with the odd drop but it's like my immune system just says no to it after 48 hours.

Allergy test through blood is the next symptom. A workmate also suggested I could be allergic to something at work, we work with a variety of silica products so it could be this.

      Worth a shot.

      Cheers

      J
