i have suffered from headaches and margraines since i was 18 months old i am now nearly 27. Up to me being about 23yrs old i just took over the counter pain killers however, these stopped working and i went to see my GP who referred me to a neurologist. He confirmed i was suffering from margraines but sent me for a CT scan just to be on the safe side. the results of my CT scan revealed i had a Arnold Chiari Malformation but this was not the cause of my margraines and headaches. they put me on a course of medication called sumatriptan which did not work for me at all. i was then put on toprimate which was working brilliantly my magraines had been reduced dramically but now have taken me off it and that there is nothing else i can take as i have tried them all. my magraines rule my life and it is making really depressed. does anyone have any suggestions of how i can try and relieve my margraines????????

@amylou - i feel for u, i have suffered with migraines since the age of 12, my dr said i would grow out of them, im 40 next month !!!!

i have been on beta blockers for a couple of yrs now and they have been a god send, i do think its best to have preventative meds instead of meds to treat it once it has come on.

i can take 3 tabs a day but only need 1 - 2 tabs, most days 1 tab but its good to know if i need more tabs on a bad day i can take more, maybe ask your dr about trying them - PROPRANOLOL 40mg, you cant take anything too strong if you have a migraine while on these, hedex, paracetamol, nurofen are ok but i dont think you will need them if your dr gives you the ok to try them.

YOU DONT NEED TO SUFFER, there are meds from the dr.

Have you noticed if there is a certain time when you get them ?? is it stress ?? is it something you are eating ?? cheese, choc, spicy food, red wine are triggers

Also, it might be worth you seeing an osteopath, mine is great, with migraines your neck and shoulders get very very tight so you could probably do with having them loosened

Sorry message is soooo long, but hope it helps. x

    Hi Amanda,

i had been taking Propranolol 80mg along with toprimate but have recently come off them. found that they only made a difference while taking the toprimate.

my headaches are usually during the night or when i wake up in the morning most days. i am keeping a headache dairy and noting everything that i am eating and drinking. i am cutting certain things out of my diet to see if it makes any difference so will have to see if i notice anything.

    thank you for your comment.
