Massage after Hip Replacement

Posted , 3 users are following.

I've read on this forum that some people are having massages shortly after their surgeries.

I was told by my surgeon and also my PT not to sleep/lay on my stomach (like almost forever).

I however would like a relaxing massage (before I loose my health benefits) and was wondering how long people waited and when they did get their massage did they lay flat/ straight or shift their operated leg to accommodate their new hip.

Thanks for your input

Hi Patricia,  Happy New Year !!  How are you ? Well I hope.  In my part of Scotland we are not offered any type of massage, but when I visit my GP next week I will enquire about it as it sounds pleasant (for a change !!!!).  After my first THR in October by two a d a half weeks I was sleeping in the recovery position on my stomach !!! I did not do this deliberately, I just woke up like that. Since my second THR in December I have been sleeping in the recovery position from week one.  The nurse in hospital said this would not be possible and was horrified when she saw me in this position !!! I find sleeping like this comfortable and pain free and have had no problems with it. Everybody is different I suppose. I'm still having problems with the detached muscle on the left side as the leg is just not moving as it should. My specialist has not decided yet whether to operate again or to start intensive physio at six weeks. I don't care what he does as long as I get back to normal !!!!!  Hope thing are progressing well with you, lots of love Maggie from Scotland xxxxxxx

PS have you got any more snow ??? We've got none yet !!!! Xxxx

      Good Morning Maggie,

I did not realize you were still having problems..hope you get it sorted out soon but without surgery!!

I'm sure if you are sleeping on your stomach and not dislocating your leg I will be fine for only one hour...I'm just a worry wort!

All the snow has almost disappeared but I hear tonight we are in for a BIG storm, so we will haul out the candles, etc. and wait and see what happens.

Hope your holidays were good to you in spite of your hip.

I'm somewhat looking forward to my left being done this coming summer...a little less panic because I know what to expect (though I realize that both don't necessarily have the same outcome),but I feel I have no choice, not use getting one done if I'm still restricted and in pain because of the other!

Stay positive and I will be looking out for you,

      Patricia

Hi Patrics, didnt realise sleeping on your stomach was a bad thing, i love sleeping like that and find it so comfortable, having said that i had my left hip done in July 28 th, so perhaps its ok at this stage, would be interested to hear if anyone else sleeps in this position, regards Chris, ( England , Kent )
