My son has had ear infections all his life he is 9. He went into hospital for investigations and they told me that he has got a diseased mastoid. He has got to go in for surgery. I do not know if he will loose any hearing or get any facial paralysis, how long he will be in hospital, or what pain he will be in when he comes out and how long will it last

i am 37yrs old and have had mastoiditis in both ears and surgery on both of them the hearing loss wasnt a great deal and sufferd no facial paralices there wasnt a great deal of pain after surgery that i can remember as i was 9yrs old when had first op back then i was kept in hospital for 2wks but that was in the late 70s.i had the 2nd op on other ear in 2002 and was only in for 2 days the worst thing is going to out patiants to have a wick removed which they put in during the op basicly its a piece of fine material about 15inches long and makes you feel quite dizzy when pulled out my ears are fine now but still have to attend E.N.T about every 6months for them to be sucked out

Have just had a mastoid operation on Weds (29th Oct) Was in theatre for nearly 3hrs, The pain hasnt been that bad really, But my throat was hurting , and then had thrush in my mouth. I went in on day of operation and was out the next day. I am 41yrs old and have been with infections, burst eardrum etc for nearly 4yrs, I take out the stitches on friday, then go back to see specialist in 3wks to take out packaging thats in my ear.( not looking forward to that), as they say it make you feeel dizzy. oh no facial paralsys, dont think ive lost any more of my hearing( cant hear much as of packaging in ear) Today my ear hurts a little but I think its the stitches that are pulling a bit. Hope your son gets it sorted soon.Hell be ok!! Tell him to be brave. Im very wimpy and was very nervous. 2-3wks off school tell him.

My hubby had a modified mastoidectomy a few years ago. The pain wasn't too bad but I did have to keep dressing the wound.

But he had a return of the infection about 5 years after and had a 2nd operation that was fairly nasty. Ended up with a wound infection etc etc. I won't go into details but there can't be manuy women who have held their husband's ear in place while the doctors reattached it!

But the good news is he is fine. No paralysis. No pain. OK, infrequent ear infections with very smelly discharge and he is deaf on that side but otherwise he is fine.
