    Hi,

We didn’t want to buy a new mattress but I needed something different for my achy shoulders and hips. We bought a memory foam “topper”. It’s 3” thick and was from costco.  It has made a world of difference.

Thanks for that info. I just called Costco in Australia and they have the mattresses at a cost of $60. I will be going down to Brisbane in 6 weeks time so will pick one up. The nearest Costco is 3 hours away!!!.

      Cheers.

Dan, prior to diagnosis and until eventual steroid treatment got the inflammation/pain under control, I slept on a folded duvet.  Thoroughly recommend it.  As far as actual mattresses are concerned, I prefer a fairly firm one, and I find that Dunlopillo with a deep latex foam top layer fits the bill perfectly, especially as I have spondylolisthesis ( a slippage of my lower spine).

Dan, we already had a sleep number we loved - for years.  When the PMR set in a year ago, we added a 3 inch foam topper.  It helped.  Cushioning for the joints and muscles has been a plus.

Hoping the best for you.  MariGrace

Thanks Dan for asking, this exactly the question I had.  I too shall try the 3inch memory form topper from Costco.  Perfect!  My current firm mattress is killing my shoulders and hips.

Hi Dan, I too am wanting a new bed for very sore hips, I had decided not to as I couldn't justify the money being spent on myself.

Any way I did go to the bed shops and tried heaps of beds, one was so nice I wanted to be locked in the shop for the night, it is a ultra plush mattress. All the ultra plush ones were great regardless of make. It had a memory foam top, the thicker the top the better, also the more expensive.

Memory foam is great but it has one disadvantage - you mustn’t use heating pads or electric sheets on it because the heat damages the memory foam.

Sounds like you need to go up on the pred if you have very sore shoulders Dan?

Mattresses are a very personal thing! I love my very cheap, plain foam IKEA mattress on a slatted base.

But as has been said - don't be sure it is the bed, it may be pred is too low or you have myofascial pain syndrome bothering your shoulders and neck.

I’ve got a waterbed, which I had pre-PMR, but is now great for supporting my aching places. I wouldn’t recommend a waterbed for a couple though as seasickness kicks in! I like the sound of the memory foam mattress topper. IKEA do lovely mattress toppers too, but I’m pretty sure they’re not memory foam. Good luck with your search!

I would love to get a sheepskin mattress topper.  Be sure if you go with foam that it's guaranteed not to off gas.
