Is a firm or soft mattress better for a person who had a total hip replacement?

My son had LTHR 8 weeks ago. He would tell you a firm mattress - too hard to get out of bed with the soft ones, or waterbeds. Also, his bed is high, so he got a footstool. Your toilet riser is really important, too.

Welcome to this helpful forum, and wishing you the best in your recovery, Pat!

I always preferred our spare bed which had very hard mattress.

Easier to get in/out, and better to lay on.  With a softer mattress I found that it either rubbed on my scar area, or overheated it.

Soft was the way to go for me! With all the soreness and discomfort that goes along with the surgery, my body needed to be babied and pampered. Got a thick memory foam topper a couple of weeks post-op and things felt better immediately!

I am 6 months from surgery and I can feel something -the rod - more now than ever.  DO others have that problem?

Do you mean the stem of the prosthesis that was put into your femur? What do you feel, and where do you feel it?

I can sometimes feel something in the entire area of the surgery.  It is not painful but I am aware that therei s something there.  At times the incision site is sore but I have been massaging it.

      Thanks

    Hi Pat

I've got a memory foam mattress which has been fine throughout my three hip surgeries - would recommend it xxxx
