MD diagnosis

Hi,

I've been suffering from tinnitus for as long as I can remember. About 3 years ago I started having problems with my left ear. I suffered a sinus infection and developed a full feeling with just slight dizziness in my left ear. Had my ears checked, hearing was fine, no fluid behind my eardrum. I was put on Prednisone, an antibiotic, and Diazide after my ENT couldn't quite pinpoint if I had MD or not. Slowly I began feeling better as the months passed and almost felt like I went into "remission" from whatever problems I was having. Felt almost back to normal in a way.

5 days ago I woke up with the same full feeling in my left ear again and the entire left side of my sinuses was completely blocked. The ringing in my left ear was slightly louder than it's ever been before. My right ear has remained unchaged without any problems. I'm just having trouble figuring out what is really going on in my left ear. It's been about 3 years since I started experiencing these problems but I've yet to once suffer from a bout of Vertigo at all. Not one. Am I alone with this or is there anyone else that has any of these problems without Vertigo? I just can't figure out whats going on and it's driving me insane.

Thank you for any replies!

Very similar symptoms ! I never get vertigo, but get a blocked ear and tinnitus. Tinnitus when the barometer changes abdcaxstorm is coming really gets my ear louder. My ent said it is Meniere's because I used to get migraines. Honestly I am feeling better as I changed Doctor and made a big difference . Decongestant may help you. I always had sinus troubles for years. Low sodium diet helps with ear issues. I hope this helps you as we are very blessed we don't have vertigo . Take care.

      Hi liz,

Thank you for the reply. It's driving me nuts not ever fully having an answer from my ENT. I've read the signs of Meniere's but can an ENT still diagnose that without a single episode of vertigo? I was always under the assumption that vertigo was the main calling card for Meniere's. It just gets frustrating not really knowing what I have and how to effectively treat it. And yes, we're very fortunate to not suffer from vertigo. Take care of yourself as well. Thank you for replying!

Also, tmj and teeth issues such as grinding and clenching all put pressure on inner ear . I do wear a bite guard . Just forgot to add this info.

It is difficult to get a diagnosis and frustrating. Everything there is so closely packed together that a lot of things cause a lot of the same symptoms. Has your hearing been unchanged during all of this? I have heard that hearing loss is one of the major indicators, but the degree is what makes me uncertain. A lot of this sounds like the things that happened to me before I developed MD with the tinnitis and sinus problems. As with you, I had tinnitis for as long as I can remember as well as frequent and constant sinus issues. I never had vertigo until a head injury in 1990 and was told it was benign positional vertigo and that even almost went away. It wasn't until 2 years ago that I lost almost all hearing in my left ear and found out I had MD. For some time prior to that I kept feeling that my ears were screwed on too tight. I was diagnosed by an ENT who was sharp and saw it immediately (lucky me).You might not have it yet and you may not ever get it or maybe there is an early phase of this disease where it is not fully presenting itself. Only time will tell how it will go. You don't have vertigo so that is a blessing in itself and this may all be driven by allergies, eustachion tube dysfunction, a low level sinusitis.. the list goes on and on. As with MD you treat the symptoms. I did sinus washes and decongestants. The washes bother my ears now but find what works best to control your symptoms and try not to dwell on it too much, you just end up frustrated and depressed and maybe no better answers than you have now. Get back to enjoying things and shift your focus to life and all of it's surprises. You have my best wishes.

      Hi donna,

My hearing has remained essentially unchanged through all of this. I've visited my ENT twice during the time period when all my problems started and there were no major changes to my hearing. Even today there doesn't seem to be any noticeable change to it other than the everyday tinnitus I've had since I was young. I have an appt tomorrow with my ENT and I'm hoping I can get some answers to this. Another audiology test ran and see if anything has majorly changed in the past year or so. Hopefully I can report back with some better news. Thank you for your post and take care!

This is not MD as your audiogram is normal.  The way you describe it, it indeed sounds sinus related, and you seem to have a sensitivity to having it with the slightest or moderation infection/inflammation, hence the many episodes.  One usually has an X-ray of the sinuses to see if there is anything.

You might have cochlear hydrops which is atypical Meniere Dx

Unfortunately I do have vertigo and am now in my 9th week with it. Not so much dizzy as very much 'off balanace'. I have seen ENT, had MRI(clear) and balance test. My left balance has completely gone but they still can't say wehgat this is. I saw a Neurologist yesterday and she feels it may be neck/back related. So I am having MRI on back and neck soon. Like you, I just want a diuagnosis , treatment and to get on with life. This ius SO debilitating. Neurologist feels I may unfortunately have two separate issues going on here. Vertigo and balance problems due to a trapped nerve somewhere. Deep joy!

Well today I had my 3rd ENT visit in the last 2 1/2 years. Eardrum looked fine, no fluid behind eardrum. Pressure test came back fine, hearing was the same it was nearly 3 years ago. I'm now on a Diuretic to see if it helps alieve any of the pressure. Even my ENT is slightly at a loss with my problems. She told me she can't quite figure me out. Gave me a pamphlet for Meniere's today but I'm still not convinced truely that is what I have. I've never suffered a single bout of vertigo in 3 years, my hearing apparently has remained the same according the the audiologist since my last visits. My left ear feels like it hasn't popped in the longest time. I can't even recall the last time it popped or felt like it did fully. This is getting beyond frustrating. She told me to call in next week and report back and if the Diuretic isn't helping we're going to look into possibly an Eustachian Tube Dysfunction. Hoping to get some solid answers.

cochlear hydrops which is atypical Meniere Dx you get

    -fullness

    -noise sensitive

    -tinnus

    if dizziness is present.

You don't have cochlear hydrops but typical Meniere

Wow you sound almost exactly as I was I didn't have vertigo had bad sinuses originally I've now had the tinnitus in my left ear for awhile and my hearing has decreased in left ear it's tolerable but after about four years I've got a few vertigo episodes prior to that I had one in the beginning and that had been it

I did have sinus surgery which extremely helped my sinuses

Please keep me posted on your progress very frustrating

I had a good result using a diuretic before, I was symptom free for months. Then it stopped working. I wish I could go back to the fullness in my ear instead of the constant buzzing that fluctuates in tone.  I have lost hearing in that ear and wear a hearing aid to mask the constant noise in that ear.

Several years before I was diagnosed with MD, I was sitting down with my husband on a floating dock, had a feeling I was falling, he took my arm, assured me I wasn't falling and it passed almost as soon as it started.

Years later, I started getting dizzy and nauseous and ended up having my worse attack of spinning and getting sick before finally researching it and getting diagnosed.

All in all, I've only had about 6 vertigo attacks, I haven't had one in about 2 years but I do have the ear problems. I'm hoping it won't spread to the other ear.

I hope you get some relief soon.
